Round 4
against Mark’s Damiano Kingmaker list. I have lost all 3 attempts up to this
point and was really struggling for a decent answer. I liked how my old
Kaelyssa list (with AFG) played against it so was keen to give my new list a
shot, as with the Destors it should be able to do enough damage to clear lanes
for the Sentinels. At least that was the plan. Mark won the roll to go first
and we got moving.
Mark
moves up his forces, Digging In with
the Trencers and following up with the Pikemen, Jacks and support staff. Ever
fearful of the assassination, Damiano is knocked down by the Buccaneer. Sure Foot goes onto the right unit of
Trenchers, and Road to War is cast on
Damiano himself.
I am
possibly too cautious of the Ambushing Boomhowlers
and really condense into the centre of the table, with Helios in the left zone
under Blur and Distortion Field. Kaelyssa puts Refuge
on herself and Feats, taking cover behind the wall. The Destors take up
position behind the Mini-Feated Sentinels, ready to charge through them next
turn with Tactician.
Whilst
Mark could get some done with his shooting he realises that it is not worth
triggering Vengeance on the Sentinel
units. Instead he switches Sure Foot over
to the left unit of Trenchers, and runs everything up to jam me as best he can.
The jacks and Pikemen move into position to charge into me next turn.
I realise
that I have to get a LOT done this turn to get ahead, and thankfully I do so. Kaelyssa
Phantom Hunter’s herself, Dispels Sure Foot off the Trenchers and
makes the left Nomad Stationary. The
2 units of Sentinels destroy all the trenchers that had fully jammed them and
Helios kills a couple, pushes the Stationary
Nomad out of Damiano’s Control, rendering it useless, and puts up both of his
defensive abilities. Then it is time for the Destors to earn their keep.
Between Impact Attacks, Assault and Quick Work shots and their Charge attacks, Destors are extremely
effective at removing infantry, and they tear through the Mercenary lines. By
the end of the turn 20 infantry are dead, a 21st is knocked down and
a 22nd on fire. I feel pretty good. No CPs are scored.
Mark hits
me back pretty hard, and pretty sensibly. The Boomhowlers Ambush on the left before Damiano Feats and shoots a Blaster shot into the Sentinels, killing
4. The rest of his forces concentrate on the Destors and the same unit of
Sentinels, clearing them out pretty well. Mark gets unlucky when an Assaulting Grenadier clips a Sentinel
from the other unit, rolling the needed 8 to hit and triggering Vengeance on an essentially full unit.
From this part Mark knew it was over, he hadn’t got enough done and the
Sentinels were poised to tear through all he had left. We called the game.
VICTORY
It is
nice to finally get one over on a list that has been giving me a lot of grief
over the past few months. I really like this Kaelyssa list (I may have
mentioned this before) and urge people to give Destors a try. They won’t do
something in every game but when you can get them into the right situation such
as here, they really turn a game. The one concern I have is that this list
takes quite a long time to play. It wasn’t a huge issue in this game but my turn
3 took nearly 20 minutes, which is definitely something I need to speed up on.
