So after having to drop out of the
York event I went over to Southport for the second North West UKISS qualifier.
I took almost identical lists to my win in January with just a slight tweak to
Vyros. Game 1 saw me face Vlad1 with a whole lot of guns. With his second list
being a very jack heavy Harkovich list, I felt like I had to go with Kaelyssa.
David gave me first turn and we got going.
I run up, keeping the Destors out
of 20” of the Winter Guard guns. The usual combo of Blur on Helios and Refuge on
Kaelyssa go out. Sentinels run up, with the 2 Soulless leading the hopefully
catch any stray AOEs and trigger Vengeance
for their units.
David walks up and starts shooting
where he can. The Mortars with rerollable scatters cause an unexpected amount
of damage to the Sentinels, killing 4 from the Orange unit. The Destroyer
shoots at a Destor but doesn’t quite kill it.
Losing Sentinels has opened up a
bit of an opportunity from the Vengeance.
I plan to kill the jacks, jam, Feat and then start bullying the table with
Helios. Kaelyssa Stalls both jacks
with Phantom Hunter, before Helios
walks up, pushes the Destroyer into itself (destroying it), and Drago into
range of a load of Sentinels. The Sentinels charge into Drago and some awful
dice means I need all 7 attacks to take it out. The left Destors charge some
Winter Guard and jam deeper, whilst the unit on the right just shoots up the
forward models, staying in Feat range. The Scyir gets onto the flag to hopefully
score next turn.
With my Feat up and his heavies
gone it isn’t easy for David to get too much work done, but with Signs & Portents anything is
possible. On the right the Mortars shoot again, but this time the Sentinels
have Iron Zeal up, keeping most of
them alive. The other Winter Guard units shoot what they can through Stealth, and remove all but 1 of the
forward Sentinels. On the left the infantry fail to remove any Destors, but do
lock them in combat. Unfortunately, he doesn’t contest any of the zones, so I
score my flag and left zone for a 2-0 lead.
All that I need to do to win is run
Kaelyssa into the right zone. I do so to score 3 more CPs and win 5-0.
VICTORY
A really
brutal experience into a gunline, but that couldn’t contest the zones to stop
me on scenario. This is why I love the 2017 Steamroller pack so much, straight
up gunlines just don’t work. I needed to realise the threat of the Mortars
earlier though. My Sentinels were in their usual triangles making it pretty
easy for him to kill them off, and there wasn’t really any reason for it.
Still, another good start to the event and will see what follows.
