Round 3 and I’m up against my second opponent from the French contingent, this time Tom with his Circle. The match up came down as Vyros2 vs Krueger2, a match which I’ve played before against a clubmate, so felt reasonably confident going into the game. Tom won the roll to go first and we got moving.

Krueger TKs each of the heavies forward a couple of inches before moving up himself. The rest of his army runs up the table, taking up as much of the board as their rocky/twiggy little legs could manage.

I advance with Vyros putting up Deceleration. I throw an Aspis forward and keep the rest of my Jacks in positions where Tom can’t get them without targeting them with either Gallows or TK. Lanyssa positions to get to the flag next turn.

Tom Hooks in the Aspis with a Gallows from one of the Wolds, before shooting it to death with his guns. The rest of his force moves to sit in the edge of zones out of my threat ranges, whilst the Mannikins put a couple of meaningless shots into my Griffons.

Make a note of this turn as I’ll be referring to it in my review at the end. It is almost definitely going to be Krueger’s Feat turn next turn, so I Feat myself so that any models pushed out of zones can walk back in if he kills anything. I start trying to work on some of the support pieces but am only able to shoot off the right Gallows Grove. We both score our flags to start coring at 1-1.

As suspected it was Feat turn from Tom, and that, combined with a couple of Geomancy TKs was enough to push me out of both zones allowing Tom to score 3CPs. He then chose not to kill any of my models to not give me a chance to move back into the zones, moving him into a 4-1 lead.

I scramble back in with as much as I can with at -2 Speed and put some shooting into Megalith, rolling pretty well and reducing it to about a third of its boxes. I contest Tom’s flag and score my own to reduce the lead to 4-2.

Tom only needs to score 3CP to win, which he achieves by taking out my objective and clearing out his left zone. With the pressure off he then goes for whatever points he can, eventually clearing out my other zone as well to win the game 8-2.

DEFEAT

Well in the end this was a pretty damning scenario defeat, and the first time in ages that I haven’t even felt in a game. I don’t think it is that bad a match up, but first turn is massive and losing that hurt me a lot. Going back to the bottom of turn 2, this is where I think I should have played differently. I knew the Feat was coming and should probably just have run to jam all the Griffons in, and found somewhere to keep Vyros safe, camping plenty. Bones lists do struggle to deal with a lot of armour and he only had 2 Stone Shapers to increase their Strength. I’m not sure whether it would have worked but in hindsight it would have been a better chance than what I actually went with. This loss put me at 2-1 for the event so far, still a decent enough platform to build from, so I needed to regroup and go again.
