His List:

-Trollkin Runebearer
-Dire Troll Mauler
-Dire Troll Mauler
-Earthborn Dire Troll
-Mulg the Ancient
-Troll Axer
-Troll Impaler
Troll Whelps
Troll Whelps
Farrow Valkyries
Min Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes
-Stone Scribe Elder

Having seen how the Vyros/Kolgrimma match plays out Andy wanted to see if Grim would fare any better. Andy wins the first turn.

Weald Secrets is cast onto the right Mauler and everything runs up, with Rush helping Mulg keep up

I advance, staying out of threat of everything except the Earthborn

Grim moves up and Feats, catching my entire front line. The Earthborn does charge in and takes out a Griffon. Mulg sits right in my face, but just out of reach.

With Fleet I can get 2 Griffons to the Earthborn, with another to build up Synergy first, so I pull the trigger and do manage to take the Earthborn out. The rest of my turn is just trying to protect Manticores from Mulg, so I run a few pieces up and Feat. 1-1.

Andy’s priority this turn is to score as many CPs as possible to put me under scenario pressure, but the one real strength of V2’s feat is pretty much always being able to contest, so after performing a lot of throws he only scores 2 to lead 3-1.

I play for attrition and take out the Impaler, Mauler and Mulg, but Whelp placement makes scoring impossible and means I have to commit Vyros more than I would have wanted. 4-2.

Andy really needs to win this turn, so either scoring 3 or killing Vyros. The scoring is pretty much off the table so he puts together an excellent assassination run with the Axer healing from Whelps to get to Vyros who had been knocked down by a throw from the Mauler. Vyros is taken out.

DEFEAT

-      Really fun game. I was pleased with how well my list stood up to Grim’s Feat, and on a less live scenario I could have played a bit safer and probably ground the game out.
-      This and my Rahn list were submitted to the WTC and locked in. As of this morning the lists have been revealed. I am so excited to get involved in this amazing event.

-Northkin Elder

Northkin Fire Eaters
Min Northkin Raiders
Min Pyg Lookouts
Min Trollkin Champions
-Skaldi Bonehammer
-Trollkin Sorcerer

2 days before list deadline day I went to visit my captain Andy for some last thoughts and a couple of practice games. Plan 1 was Vyros2 into Kolgrimma to see if it feels as bad for him as I thought. I went first.

Decel and run.

2 Raiders move up to take shots at a Griffon, doing a bit of damage. The rest of the Troll army runs up, but is careful of my threat ranges.

I take out the 2 Raiders that have been offered, and the Manticores shoot off one of the Bears, making the unit far less potent.

I’ve given Andy a few bits and pieces to have a go at so he commits to try and take them out, sending in the Fire Eaters, Bear, 2 Champs the Basher and most of the raiders, but despite doing decent damage he doesn’t take any jacks out. He covers with clouds for -2 defence. 1-0 to Andy

I take out the wave of Trolls that Andy sent in and Feat ready for the next lot. 2-1 to me.

Andy commits the rest of his army and does take out a number of Griffons, but has to really overextend to do so. At the end of the turn the score is 2-1 to me, and after reviewing the game state we decide to call it and start another game.

VICTORY

-      This game went fairly similarly to how Kolgrimma games I’ve played before have. They naturally have to play Vyros’ game allowing me to pick it apart.
-      Mirage is a super fun scenario, I think the fears over it being too live were unfounded, but it really forces central conflict.

Game 240: Vyros2 vs Goreshade1

-Slayer
Iron Lich Overseer
-Seether
Machine Wraith

Warwitch Siren

Cephalyx Overlords

With the first game finishing quickly we “rerack” for another.

Only half of my models had moved on my assassination run, so we reverted back to my top of 1 and Duncan redeployed.

Duncan casts Lamentation and Shadowmancer and runs up, being a bit more restrained than last time.

I back off to the point where I am threatening the full zones, and shoot off both Machine Wraiths.

Duncan moves up and gets into the zones, projecting threat where he can. 1-1

I Hunters Mark the Inflictor, allowing me to destroy it, the Slayer, the Ripjaw and around half of the Seether. It feels like a strong attrition turn. 2-2.

Goreshade Feats and between the Bane Warriors and his remaining Jacks he cripples or takes out a lot of my jacks. 3-2 to Duncan

Despite a strong turn of attrition Goreshade is still within range for an assassination. I build Synergy before a Griffon takes out Deathwalker allowing Vyros to destroy Goreshade

VICTORY

-      Probably a rough match for the Cryx, especially going second. Goreshade has to be up the table to leverage his abilities and puts him in danger of assassination

Game 239: Vyros2 vs Goreshade1

A bit more Cryx practice, this time against Duncan with Goreshade1. I win first turn.

Decel and run. My biggest fear this game is the Feated Banes getting too much work done, so I am careful of their threat.

Lamentation goes up and the Cryx forces run up the table under Shadowmancer.

Duncan had advanced too far with Goreshade attempting to be aggressive with Lamentation. Griffons build Synergy before 2 charge Goreshade and kill him.

VICTORY

-      Not much to say. Duncan made a mistake and it was punished.
-      We reracked and went again

Game 238: Rahn vs Skarre3

Game 238 – Vs Becky Red – Cryx – 17/08/18

My list:
Adeptis Rahn (Defenders of Ios)
-Sylys Wyshnaylrr, The Seeker
-Chimera
-Phoenix

-Officer & Standard Bearer

I played 5 games over this weekend as practice for the WTC hots up, starting with another look at Skarre3, this time in the Bane theme. I win the roll to go first.

Polarity Shield on the big unit of Halberdiers, a few TKs thrown around and everything runs.

Skarre moves up and shoots off a couple of Halberdiers and the rest of the Cryx forces run up, with the Banes in front and the Jacks behind.

I start shooting, taking out 2 Banes on the left and, coupled with some Halberdier charger, 6 on the right as well as both Machine Wraiths.

Skarre and the jacks shoot into my Halberdiers, dealing some decent damage. On the left the Banes can’t charge and so just run to engage, whilst on the right they charge some Halberdiers but Set Defence mainly keeps them alive. 1-1

I don’t have a great turn but do take out a lot of Banes and put some damage into the Wraith Engine as well as hitting Skarre with a Disrupter Bolt from Eiryss. I lead 3-1.

With no Focus Skarre’s options are limited, but the jacks continue to get work done and the Wraith Engine charges into the Phoenix, narrowly failing to take it out. 4-2.

I consider trying for an assassination, but feel comfortable that if I can just keep taking models off and scoring points that I will eventually win the game. Eiryss Disrupts Skarre again, Rahn camps most of his stack and I lead 6-2.

Becky realises that she has lost the attrition game and so goes for an assassination but with no Focus it feels like a long shot. It is, and Rahn comfortably survives. I win 8-2.

VICTORY

-      This game felt OK, Rahn’s constant threat on Skarre keeps her honest and with no way to remove upkeeps she struggles to get the melee troops in
-      The Slaughter Fleet list feels a lot stronger than this version, so I still need to plan for that.

Game 237: Vyros2 vs Krueger2

Practice into even games is going to be so important in the build up to the WTC, and so reps into things like Krueger 2 are always useful. I matched up against Andrew in Stockport and got the first turn.

Decel and run.

Krueger moves up for a turn 1 Feat, pushing me back and slowing me down for next turn, before pulling a Griffon forwards and shooting it up, but failing to take it out.

I take out a few Mannikins to build Synergy before using the Manticores’ guns and 2 Griffons to take out one of the Wardens. Vyros shoots off the Wayfarer to reduce the Circle threat ranges.

Andrew retaliates but due to my Feat isn’t able to take off too much. I lose a Griffon and a bit of support. We both score to start at 1-1

I have a strong turn taking out the Fulcrum, one of the Sentry Stones and a Woldwyrd but my dice abandon me on Megalith leaving him on a handful of boxes. 3-2 to me.

I lose a Manticore but the surviving Warden flails about and can’t take out a Griffon on the right. 4-3 to me.

My remaining jacks all but table the circle forces, taking out both remaining heavies, the second Wyrd and the other Sentry Stone. I score 3 to lead 7-3.

Andrew has the slimmest of assassination opportunities with Krueger, but comes nowhere near. I win 10-3

VICTORY

-      First turn is a pretty big deal in this matchup, and with the table how it was I was able to control the game pretty comfortably
-      My list struggles with this many flags a bit as I have relatively few disposable solos, so need to concentrate on not losing on scenario whilst grinding out the attrition.
