This Saturday I went over to
Sheffield to play in a 26 man Steamroller, which was definitely one of the
biggest shark tanks I’ve ever had the pleasure to swim around in. I brought my
usual Vyros2/Kaelyssa pair for the last time before trying some other bits and
pieces out, with the only change being switching Eiryss1 out for Eiryss2 to
make things like 9 Slayer lists feel a bit more manageable. Round 1 saw me
drawn against Dan Price, who’s Legion has given me no end of issues in the
past. He dropped Saeryn into my Kaelyss, and with me winning the role to go
first we got moving.
A standard first turn sees me
running up with my forces, with Soulless in the front hoping to be killed, and
the Destors flanking each side. Kaelyssa puts Refuge out on herself and Banishing
Ward onto Helios, to make it more difficult for Saeryn to land a Blight Bringer onto him.
Dan moves up his forces, and goes
for the big Shadow Bind + Blight Bringer play
onto Helios. A Slipstreamed and Apparitioned Hex Hunter is able to get
to Helios, hitting him to apply Shadow
Bind, but then is missed by the Arced Blight
Bringer, which thankfully scatters off into irrelevance. The rest of his
troops stay out of threat for the most part and prepare for a later turn.
I probably got a bit lucky not
having Helios locked down for the turn, so it is time to make the most of it.
It will definitely be Feat turn so I can afford to get pretty aggressive, so
Helios walks up and puts 3 boosted push shots into the Carnivean, pushing it
into threat of Sentinels who charge and kill it, putting their Mini-Feat up in
the process. The rest of my forces work on clearing out the Hex Hunters,
leaving just 3 at the end of the turn. Kaelyssa moves up to the flag behind
Helios to hopefully score on the next turn.
If Dan’s eyes lit up when I Refuged Kaelyssa onto the flag he hit it
really well. He immediately starts lining up an assassination run. He can get
The Naga, Zuriel, 2 Hex Hunters and a Spine
Burst from the Throne onto her, with me camping 3. Originally Dan thought
he could get a spell or 2 from Saeryn in as well, but lack of Eyeless Sight prevented it. Dice were
rolled and with a single attack remaining Kaelyssa goes down.
DEFEAT
Oddsmachine
(a dubious calculator at best) puts the assassination run at 11.25% (before
fire), which is a rough one to take, but realistically I should never have
given him the chance at it. There was really no reason to have her up there on
the flag, she should have just Refuged 6”
backwards and just continued the attrition game. Always disappointing to start
an event with a loss but Dan is always a pleasure to play against, and at least
I had 3 more games to claw something back.
