Game 227 – Vs Jim Gradwell - Khador – 15/07/18

Kaelyssa, The Night’s Whisper (Legions of Dawn)
-Helios
Arcanist Mechanik
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution
Dawnguard Sentinel Scyir
Dawnguard Destor Thane
Dawnguard Destor Thane

-Soulless Escort
Max Dawnguard Sentinels

His List:
Karchev the Terrible (Jaws of the Wolf)
-Devastator
-Juggernaut
-Kodiak
-Kodiak
-Marauder
-Marauder
-Marauder
Greylord Forge Seer
-Destroyer
Greylord Forge Seer
Widowmaker Marksman
Yuri the Axe
Kayazy Eliminators

Last round of the NWTC sees us up against England Lions, with me playing against fairly regular opponent Jim. Karchev vs Kaelyssa is a matchup I feel pretty decent about, but Jim is a great player. I won the first turn and we got going.

Refuge on Kaelyssa and run. Helios sets on fire, which is a pretty awesome visual.

Khador forces run up, Road to War is cast on Karchev.

Helios pulls in and kills the Destroyer, Kodiak on the left is Stationary and Disrupted. A Destor kills the Marksman and repositions to jam.

Khador forces continue advancing, taking up position on the right of the central building. 0-0

I figure that if I can kill the Devastator and keep Helios alive then I will be in an excellent position. Helios leaves the jack on 5 boxes and the Scyir can’t finish it off, so my plan has to significantly change. Things get much worse when 2 charging Destors are unable to take out a Kayazy, and as a result I don’t get nearly as much work done as I needed to. I lead 1-0 though

Due to the issues of last turn I wasn’t able to keep Helios alive, and he was taken down by 2 Marauders, along with the Destors and a couple of Sentinels on the right hand side. 1-1

Remaining Sentinels take out a Kodiak and a Marauder. 1-1.

Heavies continue to grind through Sentinels. 3-1 to Jim.

My list is scrambling super well (helped by some pretty hot dice) as I take out another Marauder. Soulless Escort scores the zone with Karchev sat in it. Awesome. 4-2.

Jim takes more Sentinels and Eiryss. 5-2

I take out the Kodiak on the left, leaving just a Marauder and a Kodiak. 5-2

Jim clears the zones to finally win 7-2

DEFEAT

-      Good game. Had my turn 3 gone better I could have ground it out but a few bad dice rolls and poor decisions on that turn moved the game away from me. I was really pleased with how the list kept going at the end though, with one extra jack dead early on I think I’d have had the momentum to get the win
-      Team lost this round, capping off a disappointing day. We learnt a lot to take forward though, and it was a great event. Can’t wait for the main team event in September.

Game 225: Kaelyssa vs Old Witch2

Kayazy Eliminators

The second day of the NWTC saw us in the top group against the other 2 England teams and the Scottish team we had played the day before. We would be playing each of them over the course of the day so it promised to be a tough day. First up was England Knights, with me into a match up I felt reasonably happy with against Rob with his Khador. The match up came down as Kaelyssa vs Old Witch 2, with Rob winning the roll to go first.

Reconstruct goes up onto the Spriggan and everything gets up the table.

Kaelyssa puts Refuge on herself and everything moves up in response. I consider a turn 1 Feat, but need to get the “no charges” benefit from it to really gain an advantage.

Rob’s list doesn’t have many guns, but the ones it does open up and deal some decent damage to my left Sentinels, with the right unit being blocked off by a crow cloud from OW.

I have a very confused turn, focussing on one plan before being forced to change tack, and as a result I didn’t get anywhere near enough done. I deal some damage to the Spriggan but it does not feel good. 0-0

As part of my really poor turn 2 I had some models outside of Feat, so Rob takes advantage of that, killing 2 Destors and 2 Sentinels on the left. On the right he reblinds some of my Sentinels. 0-0

I finally have a strong turn and start to turn the game around. I stationary both marshalled jacks, and stationary/disrupt the spriggan, taking them all out of action for the next turn. Sentinels on the right take out the Juggernaut and Helios narrowly misses out on taking out the Marauder. 0-0

Rob commits OW to take out a load of the Sentinels on the right, killing a decent number. The Marauder goes into Helios and does a little over half damage to it. 0-0

I think I have a pretty decent assassination on here, so pull the trigger and go for it. Kae puts up Phantom Hunter on Helios before shooting off OW’s 3 Focus. Helios pushes the Kodiak out of the way of the Sentinels, then I have 5 Sentinel charges and Eiryss to take her out. I leave her on one box. 0-0.

I wasn’t all in on the assassination so Rob still has work to do to get himself safe. He handles it well, taking out the Sentinels and getting the Rager over to him to absorb one of my gun shots next turn, using the rest of his focus to heal. The Marauder finishes off Helios.

I have a very long shot to kill OW with Kaelyssa’s gun, but it fails, and I concede the game.

DEFEAT

-      Bit of a sting after that one, even assuming that Kaelyssa does no damage with her gun at all the Sentinels had an 80% chance of taking OW out, so for that to fail was a bit gutting
-      A really interesting matchup, as we have so many things good at taking out the focus of the other’s army, so positioning was really important. Had I not made a huge mess of turn 2 I’d probably have been in a much better place.
-      Team ended up losing the round 4-1, so I was quietly relieved that my bad luck hadn’t cost the team

Game 221: Kaelyssa vs Borka2

Game 221 – Vs Ste Passey - Trollbloods – 05/07/18

My list:
Kaelyssa, The Night’s Whisper (Legions of Dawn)
-Helios
Arcanist Mechanik
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution
Dawnguard Sentinel Scyir
Dawnguard Destor Thane
Dawnguard Destor Thane
Max Dawnguard Sentinels
-Dawnguard Sentinel Officer and Standard Bearer
-Soulless Escort
Max Dawnguard Sentinels
-Dawnguard Sentinel Officer and Standard Bearer
-Soulless Escort
Min Dawnguard Destors

His List:
Borka, Vengeance of the Rimeshaws (Storm of the North)
-Trollblood Runebearer
-Earthborn Dire Troll
-Dire Troll Mauler
-Pyre Troll
Valka Curseborn, Chieftain of the North
Fell Caller Hero
Min Krielston Bearer & Stone Scribes
-Northkin Elder
Northkin Bear Handler & Battle Bears
Northkin Bear Handler & Battle Bears
Northkin Fire Eaters
Northkin Fire Eaters
Max Northkin Raiders
Min Pyg Lookouts

Got a game in against the club against Borka2, who seems to be gaining a lot of popularity recently. More commonly seen in Dhunia theme, but I liked the look of this list from Ste. Ste wins roll to go first.

Borka fuels the stone and everything runs up. Pygs and one Bear unit is in Ambush.

Kaelyssa Feats, puts up Blur on the left unit of Sentinels and Refuge on herself. I move up, keeping most of my army out of threat range of the Fire Eaters

Ste takes out roughly half of the right unit, opting to leave the left alone so as to not trigger Vengeance. Raiders jam hard into my lines. Both Ambushers come onto my right flank. Borka feats.

I take out what I can with my Sentinels (under Iron Zeal) and Helios so as not to trigger the Feat. I don’t do particularly well though and only take out some Raiders, 2 Bears and 2 Fire Eaters. 0-0.

Ste cleans up on the right flank but again doesn’t want to trigger Vengeance on the left. The Earthborn and Borka himself combine to take out Helios, but leaves Borka on no Fury.

I can pretty easily get all 3 Destors and Kaelyssa’s gun into him, and that will come close, but I try desperately to find some more attacks. I take a Free Strike on a Sentinel trying to get in but he dies to it. Kaelyssa shoots at Borka, taking a few boxes of, before the Destors go in, rolling well to take him out to the box.

VICTORY

-      Probably quite lucky to win that one but was unluckly to lose Helios to some pretty hot dice
-      Pleased again with how well the list dug itself out of a problem
-      Raiders are an amazing jamming unit. AD, Def13, Tough. They were a real problem for my list.
-      Borka2 is legit, but Iron Zeal managed to deal with the list pretty well

Game 219: Kaelyssa vs Kallus2

Game 219 – Vs Paul Cooper – Legion – 30/06/18

My list:
Kaelyssa, The Night’s Whisper (Legions of Dawn)
-Helios
Arcanist Mechanik
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution
Dawnguard Sentinel Scyir
Dawnguard Destor Thane
Dawnguard Destor Thane
Max Dawnguard Sentinels
-Dawnguard Sentinel Officer and Standard Bearer
-Soulless Escort
Max Dawnguard Sentinels
-Dawnguard Sentinel Officer and Standard Bearer
-Soulless Escort
Min Dawnguard Destors

His List:
Kallus, Devastation of Everblight (Children of the Dragon)
-Azrael
-Zuriel
-Nephilim Bolt Thrower
Blighted Nyss Shepherd
Blighted Nyss Shepherd
Blighted Nyss Warlord
Blighted Nyss Warlord
Spell Martyr
Min Blighted Nyss Hex Hunters
-Bayal, Hound of Everblight
Max Blighted Nyss Raptors
Max Blighted Nyss Raptors

Round 2 and I drop Kaelyssa to counter the Primal Terrors drop that I was expecting, and instead got my first experience of Kallus2. Paul wins the roll to go first.

Kallus puts up Brand of Fire and everything runs up the table.

A couple of Raptors have advanced a bit too far and are in range of Kaelyssa to shoot so she Refuges herself and removes a couple. Kaelyssa Feats and everything runs.

I had intermingled my 2 Sentinel units to make is difficult for Typhon, but he manages to take out a couple from one unit, with the Raptors taking one or 2 more. Hex Hunters run to jam.

I take out most of the Hex Hunters on the left, and charge 4 Sentinels into Raptors on the right, hitting and killing 2 of them, leaving another out of command. I charge a load of Sentinels into Zuriel but can’t take him out. Both units Mini-Feat to protect against Kallus’ Feat. 1-0 to me.

Paul attempts an Overtake assassination getting Zuriel to Kaelyysa, but he can’t clear out enough Sentinels to risk it, so just continues the attrition and puts as much damage into Helios as he can. 1-1.

I am in a good position for a strong attrition turn, and the focus is to take down both heavies. Vengeance and the Scyir take out Zuriel and Helios walks up to take out Azrael. This frees up my remaining Sentinels and Destors to clear the remaining Raptors, leaving Paul with just the Bolt Thrower, Kallus, one Raptor and support. 3-1 to me.

Paul has no option but to go for the last gasp assassination, but has to dodge a lot of free strikes to get there, and he dies to a punch from Helios.

VICTORY

-      I don’t think Kallus2 is one of Legion’s stronger casters, despite initial excitement
-      I don’t think I’ve ever assassinated someone in their own turn before, so that’s exciting
-      Solid outing for the list, with everyone having work to do, though mass Def14 plus has proven to be a concern

Game 217: Kaelyssa vs Goreshade1

Game 217 – Vs Rob Tilsten – Cryx – 23/06/18

My list:
Kaelyssa, The Night’s Whisper (Legions of Dawn)
-Helios
Arcanist Mechanik
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution
Dawnguard Sentinel Scyir
Dawnguard Destor Thane
Dawnguard Destor Thane
Max Dawnguard Sentinels
-Dawnguard Sentinel Officer and Standard Bearer
-Soulless Escort
Max Dawnguard Sentinels
-Dawnguard Sentinel Officer and Standard Bearer
-Soulless Escort
Min Dawnguard Destors

His List:
Goreshade the Bastard (Black Industries)
-Deathwalker
-Reaper
-Seether
-Slayer
-Slayer
-Slayer
-Slayer
-Slayer
-Nightwretch
-Nightwretch
Machine Wraith
Machine Wraith
Machine Wraith
Necrotech
Orin Midwinter, Rogue Inquisitor
Black Ogrun Ironmongers
Min Steelhead Halberdiers

I have been wondering whether my Kaelyssa list can handle Gaspy3’s Slayers, and was presented with a similar list, but run by Goreshade1 to act as a bit of a testing ground. Rob won the first turn.

Slayers run up the table, hiding behind the building on the right where possible.

I stationary and disrupt the Reaper, blocking in a couple more Jacks, before getting up the table myself, staying out of threat of the Slayers.

An Arc Node runs up allowing Goreshade to kill Eiryss. Goreshade Feats and sends his Banes into my Sentinels and Destors. Rob then throws a real curveball at me and runs up all the Slayers to jam me, setting me a real puzzle for next turn

I’m pretty sure that there is an assassination on here, so use my Vengeance moves on the right to clear off the Sentinels. Helios pulls Goreshade forward before Kaelyssa shoots to remove his Focus and kill off Deathwalker. It is pretty dicy with the Sentinels but I don’t need to his many 8s, and thankfully the last attack takes him out.

VICTORY

-      Not too much to learn from this, I almost wish I had foregone the assassination to see how the attrition played out, but I panicked a bit with all the Slayers in my face
-      Pleased with how I engineered the assassination, it is quite often an option with this list

Game 216: Kaelyssa vs Midas

Game 216 – Vs Tom Wiggins – Minions – 23/06/18

My list:
Kaelyssa, The Night’s Whisper (Legions of Dawn)
-Helios
Arcanist Mechanik
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution
Dawnguard Sentinel Scyir
Dawnguard Destor Thane
Dawnguard Destor Thane
Max Dawnguard Sentinels
-Dawnguard Sentinel Officer and Standard Bearer
-Soulless Escort
Max Dawnguard Sentinels
-Dawnguard Sentinel Officer and Standard Bearer
-Soulless Escort
Min Dawnguard Destors

His List:
Midas (Will Work for Food)
-Gatorman Soul Slave
-Battle Boar
-Road Hog
-War Hog
-War Hog
Bone Shrine
Gatorman Witch Doctor
Lanyssa Ryssyl, Nyss Sorceress
Swamp Gobber Chef
Bog Trog Mist Speaker
Max Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters
Boil Master & Spirit Cauldron
Max Greygore Boomhowler & Co.

I’ve never seen Midas before, so this promises to be an interesting game. Tom wins the roll to go first.

Tom runs up with everyting. Death March on the Boomhowlers.

Kae is in range of a couple of Nyss, so shoots some off. Refuge on herself and Banishing Ward on Helios to protect against Calamity. Destors take more shots into Nyss but all miss. Everything else stays out of threat.

Road Hog sprays off a few Sentinels on the left but I don’t lose much else. Rest of the Minion forces move into position.

Helios moves into the right zone and pushes the Road Hog into the left Sentinels. Kaelyssa feats and I shoot off some more Nyss. 2-0 to me.

War Hog on the left gets into my Sentinels and kills a decent number, a few Nyss walk up and kill a couple on the right, but Tom is losing momentum pretty quickly. 3-1 to me

I don’t have to kill too many models to win on scenario so I clear his flag with the Destors and score it with the Thane. I win 6-1 on scenario

VICTORY

-      Tricky matchup for Tom, especially on this scenario. It is so easy to have things get away from you.
-      Midas doesn’t seem to do much.
-      Destors with Tactician are a lot of fun to use
