Who's the Boss - Full Event Report

Who’s the Boss tournament – 21/10/17

My list:
Who’s the Boss?
-Imperatus
-Hemera
Elara, Tyro of the Third Chamber
-Discordia
Lanyssa Ryssyl, Nyss Sorceress
Arcanist Mechanik
Max Dawnguard Sentinels
-Dawnguard Sentinel Officer and Standard Bearer
House Shyeel Arcanists
House Shyeel Battle Mages

This Saturday we did something a bit different at the club. Adam Jones wanted to run his first tournament as a Who’s the Boss, with all non-Grymkin casters in the pool, and one re-roll to use over the course of the 4 games. I decided to bring out my 3 favourite character Jacks, one on Elara so I control some of my abilities, Max Sentinels as they are good on their own, but could take any caster buff extremely well, and the house Shyeel units as support and disruption. I got there extremely excited and the first casters were drawn.

Game 1: Servath Reznik, Wrath of Ages vs Ben Leach

His List:
Asphyxious the Hellbringer
-Vociferon
-Mountain King
-Mulg the Ancient
Lanyssa Ryssyl, Nyss Sorceress
Max Trollkin Sluggers
Max Trollkin Fennblades
-Officer & Drummer
Max Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes
-Elder

First game of the day sees me use a huge based caster for the first time, and he seems pretty interesting. My opponent has Gaspy3 with his trolls, and Unyielding on the Mountain King and Mulg was definitely going to be a problem. I won first turn, which helped and got moving.

I don’t feel like I can make the most of Reznik’s spells, so settle for putting up Lamentaion and casting Death March on the Sentinels, gaining a benefit of the additional Mat boost if not the Vengeance. My forces run up, ready for next turn.

Ben advances tentatively, not wanting to get into Imperatus’ threat range. Ashen Veil is cast on the Fennblades, boosting them to a respectable Def17 and Mobility is cast to help Mulg get himself up the table.

This is beginning as a far more cagey game than I was expecting, but I feel that I can still get a strong Alpha Strike if I am patient and don’t throw anything away. I advance to get into the zones and throw forward a few models to cause trouble and hopefully trigger Vengeance. Hemera shoots into the Sluggers, killing 2 and knocking down a third before Repositioning away.

Ben doesn’t want to trigger Vengeance for only 2 Sentinels so settles for just some more repositioning, and taking out the Battle Mage that I had thrown forward and runs up the remaining Sluggers to jam me up. He gets into the zones but doesn’t contest my flag, so I score a point to lead 1-0.

I consider a few ways to play this game out. I have a chance at an assassination, but I wouldn’t be able to get the Curse bubble there, so it would be extremely dicey. If I can kill either the Mountain King or Mulg I would feel good about my position but with Unyielding and the Stone bubble these are big asks. I opt for a scenario play, using my Feat and jack guns to clear out all but one of the Fennblades, and having the Sentinels take down the remaining Sluggers. I get overexcited and move reznik to the point where he can score both the flag and the right zone to move into a 3-0 lead.

By pushing Reznik too far forward I have left Ben a way out of the game through assassination. After clearing the path and setting up with Mobility and Strength from the Stone Mulg is able to charge a Sentinel and buy attacks on Renik. Thankfully I had taken out Lanyssa in the previous turn, so he was only able to buy 3 attacks on my caster, and left him on 4 boxes. I scored the flag in his turn, and immediately ended mine to win 5-0.

VICTORY

I enjoyed Reznik a lot, but definitely got too aggressive with him and could have ended up getting him killed. The way the feat melted Fennblades was pretty entertaining but I have no idea how I could have taken out the Unyielding beast without delivering all my force to it at once. Ben was a great opponent and we had a good laugh throughout.

Game 2: Captain Allister Caine vs Mark Williams

His List:
Lich Lord Venethrax
-Carnivean
-Seraph
-Typhon
-Naga Nightlurker
Blighted Nyss Shepherd
Spell Martyr
Spell Martyr
The Forsaken
Blackfrost Shard
Max Blighted Nyss Raptors
Hellmouth

Game 2 and I hit the absolute jackpot. Caine2 has gone out of favour with Cygnar players, but even if you took his shot types away completely his kit would be amazing in my list. Conversely for Mark Venethrax is much stronger into Hordes than Warmachine, especially when I have 4 Empowers to get round his Feat. I won first turn and got moving.

The things I was most excited about in this match-up were the upkeeps I had at my disposal. Fire for Effect was cast onto Discordia, which, along with a reposition from Speed of Death made it a super-mobile fully boosted 10” spray. To back this up, Bullet Dodger Imperatus could walk up the table at Def15, making life very difficult. These 2 spells cast, the rest of my forces run up the table, with Caine in a position to threaten next turn.

Mark puts up Lamentation to increase the cost of my upkeeps (I was unlikely to be casting many spells) and moves his forces up, flanking with the Raptors on the left and Blackfrost Shard on the right, with the Warbeast loadout moving through the middle.

I upkeep both spells, and consider my options. I start by trying to use Caine’s feat to remove the Hellmouth, but soon realise that this is a terrible idea, and Gatecrash to safety instead. Discordia moves up and sprays through, inflicting both the Seraph and Venethrax with Brain Damage before moving back to safety. The Battle Mages pull in Typhon for Imperatus to kill it, and the Sentinels run through, killing 2 Hellmouth Tentacles on the way. A strong turn putting me in a strong attrition position.

With both caster and Seraph unable to cast spells Mark has no way to Slipstream the Carnivean around the forest, leaving him unable to charge into Imperatus. Instead he concentrates on the Sentinels, killing 9 out of the unit by the time the turn is over. He also scores 2 points to my 1, taking an early scenario lead.

I need to clear out all of the centre and right this turn, and claw back the scenario scoring. Caine and Discordia take care of the Shard and Spell Martyr on the right, allowing Elara to run through and score the far flag. Vengeance moves finish off the Seraph, before the remaining Sentinels charge into the Carnivean, doing reasonable damage. Imperatus charges in and kills the Naga, Hellmouth and finishes off the Carnivean to clear the central zone. I had moved a couple of Battle Mages out of it though, preventing me from scoring, but I do score both flags and my zone to move to a 4-2 lead.

Mark realises that the game has got away from him and so simply tries to score some points. He casts Mortality on Imperatus, before charging Venethrax in, dealing a big chunk of damage. The Forsaken charges in as well but can’t quite get the job done, and leaves me on a few boxes. Similarly, the Raptors can’t quite finish off the Sentinels, leaving one alive, but killing Lanyssa off my flag. We both score our zones to move to 5-3.

With only 2 points needed to win on scenario and his caster on 0 focus, winning the game is pretty trivial, and I clear up the rest of his force, gaining both a 9-3 scenario, and assassination win.

VICTORY

I have been hoping to feature Mark on this blog for a while as his army is beautiful. Unfortunately for him this wasn’t much of a game as the buffs Caine gave my force were just inredible. Had I used my feat properly it would have been even more one sided, but that’s just inexperience with the caster. 4 unbeaten players left, with Cephalyx, Khador and Grymkin.

Game 3: The Witch Coven of Garlghast vs Jonny Jennings

His List:
Rhyas, Sigil of Everblight
-Marauder
-Marauder
-Juggernaut
Winter Guard Gun Carriage
Greylord Forge Seer
-Behemoth
Greylord Forge Seer
Kovnik Jozef Grigorovich
Kayazy Eliminators
Min Winter Guard Rifle Corps
-Rocketeer
-Rocketeer
-Rocketeer

Round 3 and I am randomly selected Sturm & Drang. I had a look at their card, and decided that whilst they seemed pretty good, I didn’t want to have to work out how their toolkit works mid game. In addition, only one of my possible 3 opponents was using Hordes (casters were announced before opponents) so I decided to reroll, and luck was on my side as I drew Coven. Jonny had used his reroll previously and so was stuck with Rhyas. He won first turn and we got moving.

After this picture I remembered to actually deploy the witches. Coven is complicated.

Jonny runs everything up, and puts Occultation on the Battle Engine and Rapport on the Juggernaut. He must have allocated something as well as he ended the turn camping zero. Rhyas charged up the table, standing the Gun Carriage in front of her. The rest of his forces move up the table.

With his caster on 0 I realised I could get a bottom of 1 assassination. I moved up all my army on the right, whilst considering whether to go for it or not, before going all in. Infernal Machine was cast on Hemera, before she ran up into position for Arc Noding. The second with move up to create the Perfect Conjunction triangle, before the third advances, Feats in case things go South, and casts 2 fully boosted Stygian Abysses into Rhyas. Needing 7s to hit and a total of 20 on the 6 damage dice. The dice go my way and Rhyas is killed.

VICTORY

Coven really are bonkers. Whilst you could say that Jonny made a mistake by hiding behind a Stealthed Battle Engine, he was also caught out by something that Coven wouldn’t usually be able to do. In a standard Cryx list there wouldn’t be enough Focus to cast Infernal Machine (2) and 2 boosted Stygian Abysses (4 each) but the Empowered Arc Node on Hemera reduces the Infernal Machine to cost 1, opening up the assassination run. I felt a little bad, but I had no real idea how to deal with the threat of his Battle Engine, so decided to go for it. Then Jonny and I went for ice cream.

Game 4: Father Lucant, The Divinty Architect vs Chris Young

His List:
Tyrant Xerxis
-Cage Rager
-Skin & Moans
-Rattler
-Crabbit
-Crabbit
Death Knell
Lord Longfellow
Max Dread Rots
Max Piggybacks
Twighlight Sisters
Mad Caps
Mad Caps

Final round of the event saw me draw another strong caster, but one that I have absolutely no idea how to use, in Father Lucant. Chris is using Grymkin led by Xerxis, and I am feeling fairly confident in the matchup. Chris wins the roll to go first, but the set up of the table makes it an extremely difficult choice. He eventually decides to go second, choosing the table side with the better defensive pieces. So I go first.

I cast Watcher on Lucant but inexperience in the spell means that neither warjack is really close enough to take advantage of it (I drop the spell in a couple of rounds and it is never relevant). The rest of my forces run up, ready to face the Grymkin forces.

Chris puts out Defender’s Ward on the Skin & Moans, and Tactical Supremacy onto the Piggybacks. Hs forces then run up, with the Pigs in Shield Wall, and the Mad Caps each putting out 2 Cask Imps ready to wreak havoc next turn.

With the Grymkin forces mostly out of threat range this turn, I decide to take whatever models were available and then go from there. Discordia moves up and sprays off the right Mad Cap, which in return explodes, dealing some damage to the shields. On the left the Battle Mages remove the spawned Imps, and a single Dreadrot, before Imperatus attempts to shoot off the Mad Cap, but sadly misses. I miscalculate the threat range of the Dreadrots, forgetting about Push to the Limit, and have to scramble to remove the ones in threat range of Imperatus, but Hemera is able to kill of knock down the dangers.

Chris continues his advance, and contests my zone with one of the Mad Cap Grunts from the destroyed unit, allowing him to take a 1-0 lead on scenario. More Imps are spawned on the left and the one on the right makes it into Discordia, dealing some further damage. The rest of his forces move up into my threat ranges and challenge me to clear them off.

After Hemera shooting and Repositioning to become a useful Arc Node, I start my turn by Feating with Lucant, increasing my armour, in case any of the ways Grymkin can hurt me in my own turn (Mad Caps, Countercharges, anything else that I have forgotten) come up, before casting Discontinuity and Positive Charge on Imperatus and Discordia. Discordia remembers that she is not just a Spraybot and gets involved with the Piggybacks, killing 2 and knocking down a third. The Battle Mages clear out Imperatus’ charge lane before he goes into the objective, side stepping around to the Skin & Moans. I miss the first attack but hit the second, stripping Defender’s Ward. I start to charge in with the Sentinels but unfortunately at this point a number of rules issues comes to a point and cause the game to break down, leading to Chris’ concession of the game.

It is unfortunate how this event ended, as the game was really nicely poised, but ending the game at this point was probably the best option. Chris is a good friend and I am extremely sorry for the part I played in this game falling apart. Whilst Chris conceded the game I certainly don’t consider myself to have “won” it, and with Chris and I taking 1st and 2nd in the event I very much consider us to be joint at the top,

The unfortunate ending aside I cannot recommend Who’s the Boss more. It was a great fun event and whilst some people were initially disappointed with some of the casters they were given, almost everybody liked something that their caster could do for their faction. Many thanks to Adam for arranging it as there is a lot of work involved, and for a first event it was an impressive undertaking. I’m not going to pretend that Retribution aren’t incredibly strong in the format, and that as a faction we need to work on recruiting Caine2, even if we need to glue some pointy ears on him.

Normal service will resume now, with Blood and Oil on the horizon, but I hope you enjoyed the write up for this event.

With minimal time available for gaming at the moment I am grabbing whatever opportunities I can. This Wednesday I faced off against Mark again, trying out a new version of his Thexus list, featuring Alexia & The Risen to further increase his ridiculous number of models. I only had Kaelyssa with me, so despite feeling that it would be a pretty bad match up, we went for it. Mark won first turn and got moving.

I don’t often take a picture of deployment (maybe I should, if it’s something you want then let me know) but did here because my word that’s a whole lot of dudes. I have enough experience of Cephalyx to know the important stuff to kill, but getting there may be a different matter. Either way, Mark does a whole load of running and casts Deceleration to protect against any cheeky shots I might take.

I don’t think I can afford not to feat this turn. I am going to suffer a lot of pain whether I do or not but at least I can stop Adrenal Flood charges if I feat. I move up, mini-Feat with both units of Sentinels, and keep the Destors behind ready to charge through with Tactician next turn. Refuge goes on Kaelyssa and Blur on a unit of Sentinels.

Mark Feats, pushing a lot of my Sentinels towards his line, and splitting them up out of Wall of Steel range, reducing them to Arm18. Thexus casts Hex Blast on the Blurred Sentinels, stripping their Defence boost, before his army unleashes the sprays. Needing 6s to hit (5s on the Overlords) and 7s to kill Sentinels makes it not trivial to take them out, but the sheer quantity of dice that Mark has to throw at it means that in the end around 10 Sentinels are removed, leaving only 2 that had been pushed into range. The rest of his forces run through and flank round to protect the important pieces and an Agitator runs to the flag to score next turn.

I am usually a player to plan out a full turn and they play it out in order, but in this game I just couldn’t see where it was going to go. So much depended on Tough rolls and the success of Impact Attacks so I decided just to take the turn one activation at a time. Vengeance moves cleared out the front few Drudges before the left Destors earned MVP status, by taking out a full unit of Overlords, the unit leaders from the 2 leftmost units, and the Agitator on the flag. The Sentinels charge up, taking down a handful of Drudges and the Warden on the left. On the right it is a similar story, the Destors charge though to cut out a hole for the Sentinels, who charge the Monstrosity, failing to kill it but taking out the Brain. Only one Overlord is taken out on this flank as the leaders were better protected. Helios charges through, leaving the objective on 3 boxes and wrecking the 3rd Warden. For a turn I wasn’t certain about, it worked out pretty well, but not having an overall plan took a huge chunk out of my clock. I have the Scyir on my flag and contest his, leading 1-0.

Mark goes deep into his clock trying to find a solution to all the Dawnguard and a colossal right up in his face, whilst also starting to lose on scenario. He starts with Alexia, who after my rampage of last turn is joined by the full 20 Risen. The Risen make some ineffective CMAs, before Alexia starts spending them on attacks on Helios, taking it down to slightly more than half boxes before all her risen are gone. At this point Mark realises there is no way he can kill Helios, and with it sat right in his face there is nowhere safe to go, and concedes the game.

VICTORY

I think that Mark possibly conceded this one a little prematurely, but I understand it after taking an attrition turn like my list was able to put in. Most of his left flank was useless without Cephalyx support, and the right was folding pretty quickly to the Dawnguard. His ambushing unit would have bought him a turn or so on scenario but with basically no Shield Guards or Sacrificial Pawn targets left he was definitely struggling to keep Thexus safe. Another strong game for this list, but after a 4th game of having nothing to do with Eiryss2, I’m starting to look at switching her up for either Eiryss1 or Lanyssa.

Game 106: Kaelyssa vs Gunnbjorn

Game 106 – Vs Tom Wiggins – Trollbloods – 14/10/17

My list:
Kaelyssa, The Night’s Whisper (Legions of Dawn)
-Helios
Arcanist Mechanik
Arcanist Mechanik
Arcanist Mechanik
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution
Max Dawnguard Sentinels
-Dawnguard Sentinel Officer and Standard Bearer
Max Dawnguard Sentinels
-Dawnguard Sentinel Officer and Standard Bearer
Min Dawnguard Destors
Min Dawnguard Destors
Dawnguard Sentinel Scyir

His List:
Captain Gunnbjorn (The Power of Dhunia)
-Trollkin Runebearer
-Troll Axer
-Troll Impaler
-Mountain King
-Glacier King
Troll Whelps
Janissa Stonetide
Eilish Garrity, the Occultist
Min Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes

Final game of testing Rahn and Kaelyssa and I’m up against Tom with Trolls again. With 2 colossals. So I guess Rahn is out then, and I drop Kaelyssa again. I win the first turn and get moving.

Everything runs up. This is very much the formation that I had in mind when I designed this list. Helios central, Sentinels outside that and Destors flanking. I get a bit sloppy with the Destors on the right. I want to tempt him in to Assault spray them, but leave the leader forward in threat of being Deafened. Eiryss gets to the flag

The mistake in my placement of my Destors was seized upon by Tom. His Assault spray caught both front Destors, and he chose not to boost damage on the leader, leaving him alive and Deafened and unable to perform orders. After putting down a Rock Wall in front of the Mountain King Gunnbjorn fills up the stone and Feats, moving to a trench camping nothing. The rest of his forces run up the table.

I have a fairly decent assassination opportunity here, and can go for it at relatively low risk. Kaelyssa Feats and puts Phantom Hunter on herself and Helios, advancing up and shooting Eilish out of the trench before Refuging back. Helios then advances into range of Gunnbjorn, needing to hit 2 out of 3 boosted 10s to push him into range of 5 Sentinels. I miss the first 2, and instead settle for the bonus prize of pushing the Impaler into range of the left Destors, who charge and kill it. I try not to panic at the failure of the assassination. Worst case I will lose Helios, and have Sentinels to try and claw the game back.

The position of the Destors makes it difficult for the Glacier King to get to Helios, but a combination of the Mountain King’s Kill Shot after killing some Sentinels, Tectonic Shift from Janissa and Bulldoze gets him there. But then the dice don’t work and with one attack left Helios is left on 14 boxes, so Tom chooses to keep the Gargantuan as a transfer target. A Whelp goes to the flag to score, and Eiryss means we move to 1-1.

Helios gets put back together by an Arcanist, before being fuelled up and given Concentrated Power. He destroys roughly 80% of the Glacier King before the Sentinels finish it and take down Janissa. The Destors pour through the hole and Impact into the Krielstone unit, killing all but one. The Scyir then takes his Tactician bubble over to the right flank to allow the Sentinels to get easy charge angles, and they destroy the Mountain King. Kaelyssa runs into a position of safety in the rubble in the left zone. I score twice to move to 3-1.

Tom has nothing left and concedes the game.

VICTORY

To anyone reading these reports in order I think it’s pretty clear that I’m taking this list to Blood & Oil. It just attritions so hard and with the Destors to be a useful distraction I really like how it works as a whole. It has an assassination angle which, while it didn’t work here, can win me games. I love the Rahn list as well, but there are so many situations where you just can’t drop him, whereas this Kaelyssa list feels like it can play into anything that isn’t Corrosion or Auto-point city. The Destors really proved themselves over the 3 games. I don’t see me ever taking max units, but the 2 min as harassers who can just suddenly go and kill a light is a really nice addition to the list. I haven’t felt this enthused by a new list in a while and can’t wait to get more games in with it.

Game 105: Kaelyssa vs Jarl

Game 105 – Vs Oliver Lonsdale – Trollbloods – 14/10/17

My list:
Kaelyssa, The Night’s Whisper (Legions of Dawn)
-Helios
Arcanist Mechanik
Arcanist Mechanik
Arcanist Mechanik
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution
Max Dawnguard Sentinels
-Dawnguard Sentinel Officer and Standard Bearer
Max Dawnguard Sentinels
-Dawnguard Sentinel Officer and Standard Bearer
Min Dawnguard Destors
Min Dawnguard Destors
Dawnguard Sentinel Scyir

His List:
Jarl Skuld, Devil of the Thornwood (Storm of the North)
-Trollkin Runebearer
-Dire Troll Bomber
-Pyre Troll
-Troll Axer
Fell Caller Hero
Trollkin Champion Hero
Northkin Fire Eaters
Northkin Fire Eaters
Max Trolliin Champions
-Skaldi Bonehammer
Max Trollkin Champions
Max Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes
-Elder
Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew

Game 2 of the Rahn/Kaelyssa practice game saw me play Olly and his Trolls. The cloud wall that he can put up and the general difficulty in assassinating trolls meant I wanted to drop Kaelyssa again, with him dropping Jarl in the new Northkin theme. Olly won the first turn and we got moving.

Jarl puts Quicken up on the left unit of Champions before running up all his forces. The Pyre troll sets the Fire Eaters ablaze and they run to be well up the table, putting very early pressure on, but the right flank is pretty sparse with onlt Skaldi’s unit of Champions holding it down.

Even when only advancing the Fire Eaters threaten 12”, so I’m not going to get away with trying to Feat and stay out of threat, so I’ve got to commit at least a bit. Blur goes onto Helios and Refuge on Kaelyssa herself, before she shoots Quicken off the Champions, Feats, and moves back. I advance up cautiously, keeping out of the Champions threat with Helios, and trying to lose as few Sentinels to the Fire Eaters as possible. I end my turn and await my fate.

Olly looks at going for a Mafic Bullet assassination on Kaelyssa, and ends up doing around 5 damage to her. The Champions on the right run to jam my forces, and the ones on the left move up to threaten, in the safety of Jarl’s Feated cloud wall. The Fire Eaters advance up and kill a few Sentinels from each unit, triggering Vengeance on both.

I look at an assassination myself, as Jarl is camping nothing in range of Kaelyssa, but the order of activation would mean that I was all in, so I abandon the plan and look to thin out his forces instead. Between Vengeance and their activations the Sentinels are able to remove all the Fire Eatersm and Helios moves up and kills 2 Champions, knocking down a third. The right flank proves difficult to unlock, and after all my attacks there are still 2 Champions standing, but my positioning means that they can only really attack Destors next turn. I feel in a decent position as on the left he basically has the choice of killing Helios OR the Sentinels, leaving the other to clear up. We both score our flags to move to 1-1.

I think Olly makes a mistake on the left flank, as he kills a couple of Sentinels before starting on Helios. He does make a real mess of the Colossal, leaving it on 15 boxes or so, but with Mechaniks nearby it isn’t a great issue. On the right a combination of Bomber and Champions reduces me to 2 Destors left. We score our flags again for 2-2.

With attrition swinging hard in my favour it is time to press home the advantage. The Sentinels on the left finish off the Champions and the Pyre troll and Helios starts to wear down the stone unit, leaving just one in the zone contesting (I should have used the gun to push t out, but clock pressure meant I didn’t think of it). On the right the Sentinels Vengeance forward, finishing off the Champions, before they and the Destors charge and destroy the Bomber. I score the flag and right zone to lead 4-2, and more vitally, have devastated his forces.

With the game essentially over, Olly goes for a Magic Bullet assassination again, but would need to roll 6,6 and 6,5 on the damage dice to get there (I should have made it impossible by using some Focus to heal). He doesn’t, and despite removing some more Dawnguard with the Axer. He does score his own flag, but I score mine and the zone to move to 6-3.

So all I have to do on my turn is move a Sentinel to contest his flag and win 8-3 on scenario.

VICTORY

I liked how I played this one. Kept patient before two huge attrition turns were able to turn the tide in my favour. I loved Olly’s list and it was nice to see a caster like Jarl on the table, but in the end he just wasn’t able to do enough to the Sentinels. The Destors performed a different task this game. They didn’t kill much but their armour and survivability held the right flank down before they and the Sentinels were able to break through. Then, when only 1 or 2 left, they were extremely useful in being able to Reposition back into the zones to score valuable CPs without having to commit the Sentinels.

Game 104: Kaelyssa vs Vayl2

Blackfrost Shard

The first thing I did when the new themes landed was look through my old lists to see if I could make them fit. My Nationals Kaelyssa list only needed to drop the AFG to get into Legions, and when considering what to put in in place I settled on 2 min units of Destors. The Sentinels’ main issue has been getting jammed up with infantry, and so having the DEstors with Tactician to unjam them felt like a nice fit. My first test game was against Niels, using Vayl2 in Oracles. I went first and got moving.

Nothing different to the standard Kaelyssa opening here, other than Banishing Ward going straight on her, not to be dropped for the rest of the game. Helios gained Blur and everything ran up, with 1 Destor moving into threat range of his guns and the rest staying in safe positions. Eiryss went over to the flag and didn’t leave for the game.

Niels moved up his beasts on the left but through some pretty rough dice it took 2 heavies to kill the Destor I had offered up. The rest of his forces moved up behind walls or the Battle Engine to protect against pushes from Helios. One Angel was given Occultation and Vayl put up Admonition on herself.

My apologies for not taking a picture at the start of this turn. I was just excited to do Destor things. Helios advances and uses his gun to push up the Carnivean into threat of the Sentinels, who charge and destroy it. The 2 remaining Destors on the left charge the Seraph, and with a combination of Impact Attacks, Assault shots and Pow14 Melee attacks are able to destroy the beast, Repositioning further into his lines. The other unit flank hard on the right and the second Sentinel unit moves up to threaten next turn. Kaelyssa moves up and Feats, covering all of her forces that aren’t on a horse.

Niels attempts to counterattacks my forces, but through my Feat it is difficult for him to take out anything that I haven’t offered up to him. One Destor on the left and two on the right are taken down, as well as a handful of Sentinels on the right unit. Niels is concerned about the left Sentinels and so throws an Angelius up to hold me back a bit. A Shepherd runs to his flag, allowing us both to score and move up to 1-1.

It is no simple task but I figure that if I can kill the Throne and both Angelii this turn I will win the game. The right Sentinels Vengeance into positions where they can react to other activations, before Helios destroys the Throne with Concentrated Power. The left Sentinels destroy their Angelius, but the right unit miss a few attacks into the most central one, leaving it alove on around half boxes. The right Destor clears the Shepherd off the flag and the left kills one of the Blackfrost Shard. Kaelyssa just runs to the right zone to take a 3-1 scenario lead.

With little left on the board Niels decides to throw an Angelius into Kaelyssa’s face in the hope that she can’t deal with it next turn. It is a pretty desperate play but all he has. He clears out the Sentinels engaging it using Vayl’s Feat, and manages to dodge the free strike from Helios to get deep into my zone. The Naga and Blackfrost finish off the remaining Destors, but he can neither score nor contest my flag, so I move to lead 4-1.

I have no doubt that I could have remove the Angel if I had to, as the right Sentinels could have Vengance moved round and charged, but as I only needed to score 2 more CPs it was easier to just run Helios into the uncontested left zone and win 6-1.

VICTORY

I am under no illusions that this was a very good match-up for my list, and Niels’ dice certainly didn’t help him turn the tide, but I think the Destor units are exactly the far reaching element that this list needs, and I definitely want to try it out more. This game they took out a Seraph, Shepherd and one of e Blackfrost Shard, not incredible for 24 points, but the table space they bought me was invaluable in allowing the Sentinels to do their thing.
