For the second Steamroller in a row I am drawn against Jonny in the last round, though sadly not in a top table final like the last time. This time Jonny had remembered how bad a match up Vlad1 is into Kaelyssa, and wisely dropped Zerkova instead. I dropped Kaelyssa, won the roll to go first, and got moving.

I run up the table, with only Refuge cast on Kaelyssa. I spread out as wide as possible with the Destors on the flanks in order to make it difficult for Zerkova to cover her entire force with a cloud wall.

Jonny pushes up with his forces, also flanking with his Uhlans, and keeping the Jacks behind the main forces, with the Marauder pressing forward on the left. Zerkova puts out 4 clouds, leaving her camping nothing just behind her objective.

I quickly measure and it turns out Zerkova is within 18” of Kaelyssa, so I look at going for an assassination. I upkeep Refuge so that at least I wasn’t going all in, and plan my angle. Kaelyssa goes first and deals around 8 damage with 2 gun shots, before Helios advances to start pulling her in. Unfortunately I only hit 1 out of 3 10s (2 would have pulled her into range of a lot) and so the other guns I can put into her can only reduce her to 8 boxes. Kaelyssa Feats and I just run everything into his face under Mini-Feats and leave Jonny to work it all out.

A significant part of Jonny’s turn is spent working out how to get Zerkova safe. She is engaged by 3 Sentinels and a singly Free Strike could easily kill her, so they have to be removed, triggering Vengeance on both units. The Uhlans on the left flank very aggressively, whilst the unit on the right hold back a bit more. The Pikemen grind against Sentinels, killing a decent number of them. Zerkova Feats and Jonny scores his flag to lead 1-0.

My Sentinels press through and kill a huge amount of Jonny’s forces. Vengeance allows the left officer and 3 grunts to move out of Zerkova’s Feat, allowing them a Charge order to get into and kill the 3 Uhlans on the left. The rest of the unit and the blues just kill Pikemen, removing a huge number of them from the table. Kaelyssa Stalls both the Marauder and central Juggernaut. The former is Disrupted by Eiryss, whilst the latter is smashed to bits by Helios, who also destroys the objective. I don’t contest Jonny’s flag so the score moves to 2-2.

Jonny continues the grind and it is looking pretty close. He kills a number of Sentinels including clearing out the left zone to score 2 more CPs. The remaining Juggernaut charges Helios and deals pretty significant damage, but without removing any systems. The score moves to 4-3 in Jonny’s favour.

Time to complete the assassination that I started 2 rounds ago. Helios pushes up Zerkova into range of Kaelyssa and Eiryss, with the latter being surplus to requirements as Kaelyssa fires Siphon Bolts into her until she died.

VICTORY

Having played this match up twice now I feel that it is a pretty decent one for Kaelyssa. Feating first doesn’t feel as crippling as it usually does when 2 control feats play into each other, as my list if far more capable of getting work don under his feat than he is under mine. I finished the event with a respectable record of 3-1, but my strength of schedule was pretty poor putting me in 9th place out of 26 (I think). I’m going to put these lists to one side for a bit as I know what they can do now, and need to test some other bits and pieces for future events.

Game 150: Kaelyssa vs Skarre1

Game 150 – Vs Simon Robinson – Cryx – 24/02/18

My list:
Kaelyssa, The Night’s Whisper (Legions of Dawn)
-Helios
Arcanist Mechanik
Arcanist Mechanik
Eiryss, Angel of Retribution
Dawnguard Sentinel Scyir
Max Dawnguard Sentinels

-Inflictor
-Stalker
-Stalker
Wraith Engine
Wraith Engine
Bane Lord Tartarus
Darragh Wrathe
Machine Wraith
Scrap Thralls
Max Bane Knights
Max Bane Warriors
-Officer & Standard Bearer

Round 3 and I am up against Simon’s Cryx, and in a really bad bout of “list chicken”. His pair is Skarre1 (which I could do with getting Vyros2 into) and Gaspy3 with a load of heavies (which I need Kaelyssa). I mentally flipped a coin and went with Kaelyssa and was disappointed to see Skarre1. To take the edge off the bad match up I win the first turn and we get moving.

I look at the table and feel sad. The only 2 magical weapons in my army are on Kaelyssa and Eiryss, so 2 Incoropreal Wraith Engines, plus any solos they spit out, are going to be a real problem. Kaelyssa casts Refuge on herself, and everything runs up, being careful to stay out of threat ranges of the Stalkers.

Simon runs the Cryx forces up, projecting the threat of the Battle Engines a long way into the table. The Banes advance up and toe the zones, with the Stalkers holding back ready to move in on a later turn. Skarre bags herself an extra 3 Focus for next turn (and, in a show of remarkable consistency, does so every turn).

A part of me loves games like this when you have so few good options, that all you can do is deal with what you can and hope things get better. Kaelyssa puts Phantom Hunter onto Helios, who pulls in the Stalker on the right. The Destors charge it, reducing it to just a couple of boxes and taking out a few Banes in the process. On the right I just move up, deny landing areas for the Engines, and Feat to keep him from doing too much damage.

Simon kills the Destors on the right, as well as the Soulless Escort for the blue Sentinel unit, triggering Vengeance on the unit. One of the Destors on the left is removed by Tartarus and in the centre the Banes push up. With the zones all heavily contested nobody scores.

I need to get a lot done on the right this turn to prepare for losing a lot next. Between Vengeance and regular attacks the Sentinels are able to kill all but 1 Bane Knight, and when joined by the last remaining Destor and Helios are able to finish off the Stalker, and remove a decent number of Banes including, vitally, the Officer. Kaelyssa gets out of 12” from the nearest Wraith Engine and puts some shots into the Stalker, killing it with help from Eiryss and some high dice. Again nobody scores.

Skarre’s feat turn, and a chance to get back into the attrition game. Both Wraith Engines are feated on and between them clear out the left zone, each creating another Machine Wraith. Banes charge into Helios and do an enormous amount of damage but it is still standing with systems intact. Skarre remains hiding at the back, still scared of Sentinels getting to her.

With the Engines corporeal but high armour I figure that I have to take my chance. Helios and 6 Sentinels charge in but some horrid dice mean I fail to destroy the Battle Engine. I do clear out most of the remaining Banes on the right though, so attrition on that side was still looking pretty good. Nobody scores so Simon remains 1-0 up.

The heavily wounded Wraith Engine clears all the Banes from the left zone again, whilst the other moves round to contest the central zone and threaten a more useful area. A Bane gets to my objective and takes a load of points of damage off it. Simon moves to 2-0.

I’m now feeling pretty good on attrition, and just need to start bringing back the scenario. Kaelyssa and a couple of Sentinels clear out the right zone, Helios finishes off the Wraith Engine and Darragh Wraithe is taken off his horse. I bring the scenario back to 2-1.

Simon is really running out of attacks now, so has to use both the Wraith Engine and Skarre herself to remove Helios. Dismounted Darragh and the Skarlock Thrall are his only other surviving models, and they are unable to contest the right zone, so I draw level at 2-2.

Corporeal Wraith Engines are actually quite easy to kill outside of Skarre’s Feat, so the remaining Sentinels swarm and destroy it, with a handful of others taking out Darragh and the objective. I score 3 points for a 5-2 lead.

Simon knows the game is up so just goes for points. Skarre charges and kills the Sentinel Scyir to score the left zone, and contests the centre with the Skarlock to move to 6-3.

All I have to do to win is kill the Skarlock and contest the left zone. I do both easily for an 8-3 scenario win.

VICTORY

Well this is an utterly horrible match-up. I can’t afford to ever lose list chicken like this again as with a few different decisions from Simon I would have had absolutely no change in this game. The mistake from him in my opinion came on the turn before his feat, where he just sat the Wraith Engines in the left zone. At that point they should have just run another 14” and sat either side of Kaelyssa, and given me nowhere to run, and I have honestly no idea what I could have done. Regardless, I am pleased with how the list performed in terms of how the game unfolded, and at 2-1 in the event I have a chance at finishing with a decent record.

Round 2 of the Sheffield Steamroller saw me up against Stuart Chalk running one of my favourite casters in the game, Mohsar the Desertwalker, in an interesting Bones of Orboros list. Lots of shooting in the list with a couple of hard hitters to back it up, with Mohsar’s tricks adding to it. A Vyros2 drop all day long, Stuart won the roll to go first and got moving.

Mohsar puts up Sun Hammer on himself and Mirage onto the Guardian to help out it’s threat range before all his forces run or teleport up the table, Riling to allow both Mohsar and the Fulcrum to be fully fuelled next turn. A couple of Pillars of Salt are put out to stop the relatively minor amount of shooting in my army.

With Synergy up on Vyros I have to be a bit careful of the Woldwyrds, so opt to stay safe behind a cloud, casting Deceleration and protecting with a few Shield Guards. The rest of my forces run up, with the support sufficiently far back to protect them from Electro-Leaps and Mannikin Sprays.

The circle gunline opens up into my warjacks, and Stuart learns just how ineffective POW10/12 shooting is into Vyros’ battlegroup. One Griffon is Stationary and reduced to about half boxes, and a few other bits of damage are scattered around, but in general my army is in pretty good shape. Mohsar puts out 4 Pillars to make my life difficult and sits at the back of the zone camping nothing.

The Stationary Griffon shakes, and a quick measurement confirms that he is in range of Mohsar, so I’m on for the assassination. An Aspis breaks both relevant Pillars, before the other 3 left Griffons take out Mannikins to build Synergy. Arcanists fuel and Concentrated Power the Griffon, with one doing a Repair to make sure a lucky Sun Hammer roll can’t take out the Halberd. The Griffon charges in through the forest, and kills Mohsar with one shot.

VICTORY

Stuart was in a really bad matchup here and the mispositioning of Mohsar (he forgot about Bird’s Eye) only really sped up how the game would realistically have gone. If not going for the assassination I think I could have taken out both Wyrds on the right as well as the Guardian, and coming back from that would have been very difficult. Nice to get on the board for the event and hopefully I can push on from here.

This Saturday I went over to Sheffield to play in a 26 man Steamroller, which was definitely one of the biggest shark tanks I’ve ever had the pleasure to swim around in. I brought my usual Vyros2/Kaelyssa pair for the last time before trying some other bits and pieces out, with the only change being switching Eiryss1 out for Eiryss2 to make things like 9 Slayer lists feel a bit more manageable. Round 1 saw me drawn against Dan Price, who’s Legion has given me no end of issues in the past. He dropped Saeryn into my Kaelyss, and with me winning the role to go first we got moving.

A standard first turn sees me running up with my forces, with Soulless in the front hoping to be killed, and the Destors flanking each side. Kaelyssa puts Refuge out on herself and Banishing Ward onto Helios, to make it more difficult for Saeryn to land a Blight Bringer onto him.

Dan moves up his forces, and goes for the big Shadow Bind + Blight Bringer play onto Helios. A Slipstreamed and Apparitioned Hex Hunter is able to get to Helios, hitting him to apply Shadow Bind, but then is missed by the Arced Blight Bringer, which thankfully scatters off into irrelevance. The rest of his troops stay out of threat for the most part and prepare for a later turn.

I probably got a bit lucky not having Helios locked down for the turn, so it is time to make the most of it. It will definitely be Feat turn so I can afford to get pretty aggressive, so Helios walks up and puts 3 boosted push shots into the Carnivean, pushing it into threat of Sentinels who charge and kill it, putting their Mini-Feat up in the process. The rest of my forces work on clearing out the Hex Hunters, leaving just 3 at the end of the turn. Kaelyssa moves up to the flag behind Helios to hopefully score on the next turn.

If Dan’s eyes lit up when I Refuged Kaelyssa onto the flag he hit it really well. He immediately starts lining up an assassination run. He can get The Naga, Zuriel, 2 Hex Hunters and a Spine Burst from the Throne onto her, with me camping 3. Originally Dan thought he could get a spell or 2 from Saeryn in as well, but lack of Eyeless Sight prevented it. Dice were rolled and with a single attack remaining Kaelyssa goes down.

DEFEAT

Oddsmachine (a dubious calculator at best) puts the assassination run at 11.25% (before fire), which is a rough one to take, but realistically I should never have given him the chance at it. There was really no reason to have her up there on the flag, she should have just Refuged 6” backwards and just continued the attrition game. Always disappointing to start an event with a loss but Dan is always a pleasure to play against, and at least I had 3 more games to claw something back.

Well this is awkward. I wanted to test my Kaelyssa list as an answer into the mirror match (which I have minimal recent experience in) and it turns out that Paul had the exact same idea, resulting in a full mirror match. Paul’s list has much greater assassination threat than mine, whilst mine attritions harder on paper, so the game from my point of view was going to be all about staying safe and grinding the game out. Paul won the roll but favoured the side with the hill to give some protection against Phantom Hunter shooting, so I got moving.

Whilst Paul doesn’t have too much shooting in his list there is definitely enough to make putting Blur on Helios worthwhile, with Kaelyssa putting Refuge on herself as is pretty standard. My forces run up, slightly awkwardly due to the positioning of some terrain, with the Destors flanking on each side, being careful to stay out of the Hydra’s walk and shoot range.

Not careful enough, unfortunately. I had managed to forget about the +2 inches of range that the AFG gives jacks, so after the Battle Engine runs up, a Phantom Hunter boosted Hydra is able to take out one of my Destors on the right. The rest of Paul’s troops move up, with Blur on Kaelyssa herself. The Halberdiers Shield Wall and move up to jam my Sentinels.

A bit of a shame to lose a Destor unnecessarily like that but really nowhere is safe from the range of the Hydra. My plan this turn is to take out the Phoenix and as many Halberdiers as I can get to. Helios moves up into the zone and pushes the Phoenix twice into range of many Sentinels, who charge and destroy it, and 3 of the 4 Halberdiers in front of them. Kealyssa feats and both units Mini-Feat to protect against any blasts from the AFG.

With Stealth up across my army and not wanting to trigger Vengeance on the Sentinels Paul is fairly limited with what he can do this turn. He takes out the Sentinel Scyir, removing Tactician from my forces and puts some damage into Destors on the left but generally just Feats and moves to make my next turn as difficult as possible. Nobody scores.

Paul has jammed me up pretty well and losing the Scyir really reduces the effectiveness of the army. Eiryss shoots out the Halberdier Banner, reducing the bubble of command and allowing the Destors a bit of freedom. The Sentinels take out a handful more Halbs, with 2 running through to engage the AFG. Helios walks up, pulls in the Hydra and kills it, setting 4 Defenders on fire with Flame Burst. I could score this turn but it is quickly becoming apparent that I only lose this game by assassination, so keep Kaelyssa safe instead.

This was the turn I was worried about as finally Paul’s ranged models have a chance to do significant damage to me. He needs to clear out the models engaging the AFG first, and unfortunately the Priest’s spray only kills one, requiring Eiryss and a Defender to take out the rest. The remaining Defenders charge into Helios and deal decent damage including taking off it’s right arm with Precision Strikes. The Halberdiers continue to jam Kealyysa clears out the right zone to move into a 1-0 lead.

With Feats gone and with me in an attrition advantage it is time to get work done. The Sentinels finish off the Halberdiers and put attacks onto the Ghost Snipers, and though all 5 attempts at a 7 fail, at least they are tied up. The rest destroy the objective and swarm the AFG, ready to attack next turn. Helios kills 3 of the Defenders, setting the rest on fire. I score the left zone, objective and right flag for a 3-1 lead.

Despite most of the Defenders burning to death Paul kills a lot of my army here, using the AFG Momentum Shots to clear out a load of Sentinels, clearing up a Ghost Smiper to finish off a Destor. Kaelyssa moves up and kills both Arcanists before Refuging to the flag. Paul scores 2 to close up to 3-3.

Helios walks in to contest the right zone before punching the AFG to death. Sentinels take out the Ghost Sniper and clear out the flag for Eiryss to score it. Score moves to 5-4 to me but attritionally I am well up in the game.

Paul fails to contest my flag, with the remaining Sniper dying to a Free Strike. He settles for killing off more Sentinels, with the clock being his only viable win condition with me on only 5 minutes. I end the turn 7-5 ahead.

I could possibly win this turn but decide that it isn’t worth the time to try and work it out. I run Helios to contest the flag to stop Paul’s scoring, and run my Sentiels to block Eiryss. I score 2 to lead 9-5.

And Paul knows the game is up, with me winning 11-5 on scenario.

VICTORY

Some mirror matches can be a really tedious affair, or simply decided by first turn, but this one actually felt quite interesting. With us both having Phantom Hunter on both our casters and Eiryss there were always threats on the table. I was always going to have a stronger attrition force and kept Kae safe for the whole game whilst grinding out a win.

Game 146: Ravyn vs Skarre2

Game 146 – Vs Duncan Harradine – Cryx – 09/02/18

My list:
Ravyn, The Eternal Light (Shadows of the Retribution)
-Banshee
-Manticore
Elara, Tyro of the Third Chamber
-Harpy
-Harpy
Arcanist Mechanik
Eiryss, Mage Hunter of Ios
Narn, Mage Hunter of Ios
Max Mage Hunter Strike Force

Max Mage Hunter Strike Force
-Commander
Spears of Scyrah

His List:
Skarre, Queen of the Broken Coast (Slaughter Fleet Raiders)
-Kraken
-Corruptor
-Deathripper
-Nightwretch
Lord Rockbottom
General Gerlak Slaughterborn
Max Black Ogrun Boarding Party
The Devil’s Shadow Mutineers
Max Bloogorgers

I haven’t played a Shadows list for a long time, and wanted to test whether the age old list of Ravyn plus Mage Hunters was still viable, as well as trying out some Harpies on Elara1. Duncan was using the same list as last game and this time he took the first turn and got moving.

The Cryx forces run up. Duncan chooses not to bother with Death Ward due to all the blessed weapons, but we later consider this to be a mistake. The Bloodgorgers move up the right flank with the Boarding Party on the left. The Kraken presents an imposing threat centrally.

I figure that the best thing to do is go for the first turn Feat and clear out what I can. Ravyn starts and takes a Blaster shot into the Bloodgorgers, killing 2 and knocking down a third. The rest of my forces shoot into the Cryx forces, largely ignoring the Kraken. I kill off 3 of the Boarding Party, the Corruptor and one of the Mutineers. I am satisfied enough with the turn.

I have positioned the Banshee really badly, allowing the Kraken to get into it. Through a combination of Black Spot (cast onto the Mage Hunters), regular attacks and Kill Shot the Kraken is able to put out an incredible amount of damage, killing the Banshee and a whole load of Mage Hunters. On the right one Bloodgorger gets into the Mage Hunters, killing 4 before his Beserk spree ends. Skarre Feats to protect herself, both Arc Nodes, one Boarding Party member and the Kraken. I look at the table and it looks pretty grim.

I continue to chip away at the Kraken on the left, but his Feat makes it difficult, By the end of the turn it is about half dad though, and engaged by the difficult to remove Spears of Scyrah. Mage Hunters on the right charge into some Bloodgorgers, thinning them out further before protecting myself with Covering Fire. I contest all the zones so nobody scores.

The Spears of Scyrah do their job as it takes the Kraken’s full activation to kill the unit. The remaining forces on the left leave me with just 4 Mage Hunters. On the right the Cryx forces can’t quite clear the zone, leaving a single Mage Hunter alive. Duncan still scores the left and central zones for a 2-0 lead.

It is time for Ravyn to get involved, using her impressive personal suite of Blaster, Quick Work and Swift Hunter to clear the zone with a little help from the remaining Mage Hunter and the Manticore, though it takes all her Focus to do so. On the left the Harpies to great work shooting at the Kraken, leaving it weak enough for a single Mage Hunter to finish it off with a charge. The rest of the Mage Hunters finish off the Boarding Party. I score the right zone and Duncan the central to move to 3-1.

With the attrition game having suddenly swung in my favour and my caster on zero Focus Duncan realises that he has to go for a relatively long odds assassination. Rockbottom has a shot on her which misses, blast damage from the Nightwretch deals some damage before Skarre arcs 2 Blood Rains into her. The dice don’t go as he needs and Ravyn is left on 8 boxes. The Deathripper kills another Mage Hunter and Skarre scores the central zone for a 4-1 scenario lead.

With Skarre camping nothing I go for the counter assassination, shooting at her with the 2 Harpies and killing her.

VICTORY

A really tough fun game, and I actually quite like the list. The strong shooting has just enough melee presence to back it up and had I not thrown away the Banshee early on I may have been able to deal with the Kraken sooner. It was great to be able to do some of Ravyn’s trickery without getting her immediately killed. I don’t think the list would ever make it into a competitive pair, but it gives an interesting option with her being on ADR.
