The Final round of the Steamroller
sees it end how it began, with Kaelyssa facing off against Vlad1, this time
with Jonny at the helm of a very different looking list. The 2 Gun Carriages
are an interesting choice that I quite like, but it does result in
significantly fewer shots in the army. I win the first turn and we get moving.
The usual drill: run up, stay out
of threat of most of the guns, cast Blur on
Helios and Refuge on Kaelyssa. Things
I do slightly differently in this game is push the Soulless Escorts
aggressively forward to try and “catch” any AOSs that start floating around.
Eiryss moves up aggressively behind the forest ready for next turn.
Jonny moves up, taking some shots
where he can. Under Signs and Portents he
takes out 2 of my left Destors, leaving an irritating area of difficult
terrain. He unfortunately also takes out one of my Soulless, triggering Vengeance on the left unit of Sentinels.
The troops on the right run up to try and get good shooting angles on Helios
next turn.
Time to get a first strike in on
the Khador forces. Vengeance allows
my Sentinels to get forward into a position to strike. Kaelyssa Feats and puts
out Phantom Hunter onto Helios,
before Stalling the right Marauder.
Helios walks up, pushes the left Marauder towards the Sentinels, and pulling
the right one in, destroying it. The Sentinels make short work of the left
Marauder and Eiryss Disrupts the
third, limiting any response. The left Destor runs back to toe the zone in a
scoring position, whilst the right unit kill of 8 Winter Guard with a
combination of Impacts, Charges and Quick
Work shots.
My Feat makes it really difficult
for Jonny to respond. His Gun Carriages can’t do any of their tricks so have to
accept just removing the furthest forward Sentinels. He kills off one of the
Destors on the right flank, and under Feat is able to walk the last Marauder
into Helios, dealing impressive damage with just its initials. He is unable to
clear out his zone though so I take a 1-0 scenario lead.
4 CPs will see me through the game
and it is possible to achieve it. The left zone just has the Gun Carriage which
is taken out by Sentinels, the right zone has just 2 Winter Guard who are
kicked to death by horses. The final point can come from destroying the
objective which is shot by Eiryss before being charged and destroyed by
Sentinels. However, in a phenomenally stupid error in order to clear Eiryss I
had pushed the Marauder into the right zone, before bad dice from Helios meant
I failed to kill it. This meant I only scored 3 CPs to move to 4-0. There was
no reason at all to make this error and I waited to be punished for it.
Jonny tries to look for an
assassination angle on me but there just isn’t enough in range, so focusses on
just killing what he can. He finishes off the blue unit of Sentinels before
shooting everything he has into Helios, leaving him on just a single box at the
end of the turn. We both score a single point and it is looking like I’ve got
away with my last turn error. I lead 5-1.
I run the Sentinel Scyir into the
zone to score, kill a handful of models that had annoyed me, and end the turn,
scoring one final point to win 6-1. Eventually.
VICTORY
Well I
made harder work of that than I had to, but it is still nice to get a second
Steamroller win on the back of my first last month. This was a pretty good
match up for my list in a lot of ways that I’m not sure Jonny really saw, and
had I not messed up in turn 3 it would have been a pretty impressive display.
As it was I just decided to keep the game interesting a bit longer…
In terms
of the UKISS qualifier my place was handed down, allowing both Jonny and Glen
my round 3 opponent to qualify. I really like this pair and will likely be
playing it until the end of the month when I have another Steamroller and then
I will be putting it away to try some other things for a while.
