At the recent UK Invitationals two things came to light. The first was that my 3-2 performance was enough to get me a place on England Roses for the upcoming WTC, and I am delighted to be back on the team for another year. The second was that I lost a bet, resulting in my having to play Helynna at the next 2 day event I play in, which will be in York in early March. Not wanting to go in completely unprepared I wrote up a list that is similar to her old style, but with the additional tricks that we can pull now that we have the Trident and Discordia in the Forges theme. My first practice game is against Nick with his Menoth, and with me getting the first turn we get moving.

With Rhythm of War starting in play from my theme benefit, and Deceleration being pretty much useless due to all the Blessed weapons I don’t need to do anything with Helynna this turn, so everything just runs up the table, with Discordia putting out her Kinetic Field.

Harbinger also doesn’t have much to do with her Focus on turn 1, and so just gets up the table. Nick takes a few shots with Errants into my lines but gives up when he realises they are going to be pretty useless following my Feat.

I really want to hold my Feat for a turn, and so I decide just to hold back and shoot, putting some Covering Fire in front of the Errants. A number of the Bastions are out of Martyr range, so they go down quickly, with Nick choosing to save health on Harby rather than overly Martyr the rest. I Rhythm back to relative safety and hope that I survive the next turn in reasonable shape. On the left my Trident shoots off the Dervish.

The reasoning for Nick not Martyring the Bastions much was so that he could use his health resource to charge the Errants through the Covering Fire before my Feat was up. He does so and between them and Gravus they take a huge chunk out of one Manticore, and chip some damage onto another. The Cinerators move up on the left but it doesn’t feel that that will be where the game is won or lost. Harbinger ends the turn on around 10 health and with the score at 0-0.

The key for me this turn is to clear out the front line, take out the objective and Feat to really blunt Nick’s response. I know how much Nick wants to keep Gravus alive, so punch him down until he can’t afford to Martyr any more. I move the Reckoner in closer with a push from Helynna and a Smite from the left Trident, who also rolls some hot dice to take out the objective. The rest of my Battlegroup clear out the Errants and the right Trident pushes up to deal some damage to the Sanctifier. I score 2 to lead 2-0.

Nick now has the unpleasant task of playing an uphill attrition game into Helynna’s Feat. He puts every attack he can into my Tridents, but can only reduce both of them down to 5 boxes. In realisation that the game is lost, he tries to see if Harbinger can finish them both off. He rolls the boosted 12 needed to take out the right, but cant get close enough to get the Pow needed on the left, and leaves it on a couple of boxes. With Harbinger on no camp and 2 boxes in front of my army, Nick concedes.

VICTORY

Nick is new to Harbinger and probably didn’t play a perfect game here, but I was still really pleased with how I dictated the pace of the game and held my Feat back an extra turn. Doing do would have essentially given me two full turns of attrition, which was more than enough to win the game. I really enjoyed playing the list, which is a real change form how boring I found her pre-CID, so I was looking forward to getting in some more games.

Game 259: Vyros2 vs High Reclaimer

One list I didn’t get the opportunity to practise against before flying to Poland was the High Reclaimer plus Judicator list that seems to be everywhere. Theorising it in my head I don’t think it is a good match up, middle defence (12) and middle armour (18, as Blessed ignores Deceleration) is exactly what the Judicator wants to be shooting out, so positioning was going to have to be perfect. I win the roll to go first and we got moving.

There is no point in casting Deceleration so I just run up the table, getting Vyros into an aggressive spot behind the building. I put up Force Wall with the Artificer and make sure that everything that could possibly die to blast damage is within 3” of it. I can’t fully stay out of the Judicator’s threat, doing so would surrender too much table, but I make sure to be out of the 15” walk and spray range so that I only have to take the rockets.

Hand of Fate is cast onto the Judicator who moves up and puts some decent damage onto a couple of Griffons. Errants shoot with their crossbows but at dice-8 don’t have much impact.

I commit pretty hard in an attempt to start the attrition. I take out a load of Errants before putting a max Synergy Griffon into the Dervish, but rolling pretty badly to leave it alive. I put up Covering Fire in front of both Knights Exemplar units to reduce damage next turn and Feat, hoping to open up some options for next turn.

A combination of the Judicator, Dervish and Knights take out the 4 lights I had committed with, with High Reclaimer Feating to bring back most of the Errants that had been killed in an attempt to keep the Manticore away from the Judicator. 1-1

I do manage to clear a path for the Manticore, and kill most of the Knights on the left flank as well as the Seneschal. The Manticore rolls pretty badly, including missing an attack, on the Judicator, dealing pretty minimal damage. I put up some covering fire on the right to try to protect my contesting jacks. 2-1 to me.

Through some clever angles and use of Tactician Paul is able to take out the Manticore before activating the Judicator. The Judicator aims and shoots Vyros down to a few boxes, with an Errant charging in to finish him off.

DEFEAT

With practice maybe this matchup gets better for us, but I’m really not sure, it seems to just get around everything that Vyros wants to do. The more popular list seems to have Vengers and Cinerators instead of Knights and Errants, and the reduced number of attacks may make that a bit more manageable for me, but it is definitely a game I’d be looking to dodge at the WTC.

There were a number of players staying near our Warsaw apartment, and plenty popped in throughout the day to hang out or play games. Justin Du came in looking for a game with his Menoth pair of Harbinger and Reclaimer, and with both of those being useful practice, I asked him for a game. He dropped Harbinger and with me winning the first turn we got moving. Note: We played this game on a board that was on top of a bed, it was pretty low down, but meant that I was able to get a cool angle for the photos, which I quite liked.

Vyros caste Deceleration and everything runs up the table. Taking up table space is vital against Harbinger, and I think Justin has been a bit adventurous with his positioning of the theme wall. I am threatening the space behind it with Vyros and a couple of Griffons.

Harbinger moves up and casts Purification, stripping Synergy from Vyros. Her army runs up, with the Idrians taking some shots at my jacks, but dealing pretty minimal damage. The two Champions run up very aggressively to sit right in front of my army.

I power up my jacks with the support and get to work. I am able to take out 4 Idrians as well as one of the Champions, unhorsing the other, and have reduced Harbinger well down on health. I put a Covering Fire down in front of the Forge Guard to make it expensive for Harbinger to get them charging through it.

Justin power up his jacks and attacks back into my army. He takes out my Aspis and deals some reasonable damage scattered around into the rest of my jacks. The Idrians run to engage me and he starts taking positions to score points. Harbinger scores her zone and a Monk scores the left flag to give Justin a 2-0 lead.

This turn is pretty key to how the Vyros2/Harbinger matchup plays, so warrants a bit of talking about. Harbinger is within 13” of Vyros (given Pathfinder from the objective) but behind cover, there is a single Idrian in the charge lane. I can get 9 attacks onto the Idrian with the 2 Griffons on that flank, leaving Harbinger in a very shaky position. Justin makes the decision to let the Idrian die quickly, thinking that the best way to survive (behind cover with boxes, so essentially 18/19 against Mat10/Pow17) is to camp her stack. I hold off on Vyros’ activation for the entire turn, taking out the rest of the Idrians, Purifier, Sanctifier, Champion and a number of Forge Guard with no Martyrdom reprisal because every health Harbinger loses makes my assassination more and more likely. At the end of the turn I look at the table, am miles ahead on attrition, and reject the assassination run. I score my zone to close to 2-1.

Justin doesn’t want to kill anything on my Feat turn, as doing so will lose the control he has over my assassination angles, so he chooses to just continue taking chunks out of my jacks. We both have the scoring elements pretty locked down now, so nobody scores to leave Justin leading 2-1.

Justin rolls pretty high on his Martyrdom rolls this turn, making my life a bit easier. I take out all but one of the Forge Guard, and remove the Devout. Monks stop me scoring any flags and I foolishly fail to score my zone, but there is barely anything left on the Menoth side.

Justin is forced into an assassination attempt as he has barely anything left on the table. Harbinger charges in and casts 2 fully boosted Cataclysms from 4 inches away, reducing me to a handful of boxes. The Monk on the right charges in and misses both attacks. Justin concedes.

VICTORY

A really good game against a great opponent. I always enjoy Vyros against Harbinger games as they quite often play out like this and ask a lot of questions to each side. My assassination odds would have been around 84% had I gone in a couple of turns before the game, so maybe I should have done, but the attrition game felt pretty comfortable from that point so I felt that I would be better off just playing it out. Justin played in the Solo Masters at the WTC, finishing in 3rd place.

There is a lot of Exemplar Interdiction at the WTC this year, so another game into is to continue to feel out how it plays. This list was really focussing on the medium bases, with Defenders Warded Cinerators being an obvious threat. Matt wins the roll to go first.

Defenders Ward goes onto the right Cinerators, and Vision onto BoV. Everything runs up.

I advance up the table, shooting off 2 Errants with Vyros and putting up Covering Fire in front of the rest.

Errants plink a bit of damage into my jacks but nothing too significant. The medium bases on the right move up between the two buildings.

3 Griffons on the left take out all the Errants, 3 Griffons on the right deal with the unit of Cinerators over there. The Manticores shoot off one of Rhoven’s Co and sig aggressively in the centre. Vyros Feats. 0-0

Severius does a load of spells before the remaining Exemplars charge in. Unfortunately the awkward table state means he can’t always attack where he wants, and only 2 Griffons go down. 0-0

I build Synergy, Aspis takes out the last Shield Guard and the Manticores shoot Severus to death. I missed a better play here, using the Aspis to slam the Guardian over Severius, but still had plenty of attacks to take him out.

VICTORY

-      Was surprised how quickly DW Cinerators went down, but after Concentrated Power and Synergy a Griffon only needs a boosted 10 to kill one.
-      Bastions are reasonably easy to play around, this and the Harby game shows that they aren’t necessarily the problem I thought they would be

Harbinger is predictably everywhere at the WTC, with quite a few taking an EI list instead of the standard. I got a practice game in against Andrew playing Greece’s list. I won the roll to go first.

With Decel pointless Vyros just runs to the centre of the table, with the jacks following.

Menoth forces move up, taking shots into me where available. Harbinger Feats.

I make a start on getting Harby down some health by putting attacks into the Errants, eventually removing her ability to Martyr. I kill a load more before switching onto the Bastions, managing to take out all but one. I take reasonable damage from Feat + Defensive Strike but have a pretty strong attrition position. I put Covering Fire in front of the rest of the infantry.

Andrew decides to bite the bullet and, after healing up Harbinger with her stack and objective/Hierophant, charges a unit of Knights through the Covering Fire, Martyring them when they die. This, on top of the rest of his attrition, ends up taking out quite a few jacks, but leaves Harbinger pretty low on HP by the end of his turn.

I can get an angle on Harbinger with both Manticores and Vyros, so choose to go for the assassination, successfully taking her out.

VICTORY

-      Vyros’ ability to switch up his focus is really strong into Harby, picking on whichever part of her army is most useful.
-      I don’t think this list is as strong into me as the Faithful masses version, as everything in the EI is within reasonable DEF/ARM numbers

Our second round into Scotland and my second game into Billy’s Menoth. The matchup comes out the same way again, and once again I went first.

Deceleration and run.

Ashen Veil on the Idrians and run in response. Let the games begin.

Discretion being the better part of valour I keep more Focus on Vyros that I did last game, but still manage to take out a decent number of Exemplars, putting down a Covering Fire to force his Feat next turn.

Billy does Feat, and kills 3 Griffons. My Feat means we play an interesting dance with my trying to engineer an assassination angle with Vyros, but he manages to block it off. 1-0 to Billy.

I kill more Exemplars and put down another Covering Fire template. I lead 2-1.

I lose a Manticore and a Griffon, attrition is starting to go badly. 3-2 to Billy

I kill more Exemplars. Support staff have resorted to making attacks, they do better than I expected. 4-3 to me.

I lose a Griffon and some support, I am pushed right back into my zone. 5-4 to Billy

The game is lost, and I’m just trying to score what I can at this point. Exemplars die, but my ability to contest has gone. 5-7 to Billy.

Not too much dies from this turn, Billy just keeps the pressure on. 5-9.

I can’t stop Billy winning this turn, but have the opportunity to actually take out a unit, so do so and finish off the max unit of Errants. It is a great success. I lose 11-5.

DEFEAT

-      That Testament list just grinds so well, without RFP or incredible infantry removal at range I just don’t know how you could get through it. Possibility to reintroduce Shadows at some point post WTC to deal with this kind of thing
-      Team lost the round 3-2, a disappointing result after taking them down yesterday.
