Second game of testing Helynna’s Mage Hunters saw me face against Adam, who was playing Mercenaries whilst waiting for the Revelator to be released. He is expecting to be playing Mercenaries for a very long time. I won first turn and got on with things.

Turn 1 was a standard running up the board with Deceleration and Rhythm of War up. I flood the field with a sea of dudes. It feels awesome.

Adam starts by casting some of his seemingly endless upkeeps, Snipe on the Mule, Death Ward on the Hammer Dwarfs, and Blur on the Idrians. He runs up and uses the Idrian Minifeat to let them Dig In.

I look to make a start on the infantry units. The left Mage Hunters shoot into the Hammer Dwarfs, killing 1, the Infiltrators charge in but fail to break their armour, Repositionning to dig into his lines. On the right the Spears of Scyrah used their reach to undig several of the Idrians, and the Mage Hunters then shot them off with their Blessed crossbows. The Manticores advanced and placed Covering Fire where required.

Not shown in the above picture is the 3rd Covering Fire template which is on top of some of the Hammer Dwarfs, forcing them to move away or take a POW 12 hit. During Adam’s turn he takes a couple of Free Strikes getting out of it, and loses 2 dwarfs, but kills off all the Infiltrators engaging them as well as the 3 in the open. The Idrians kill off the Spears of Scyrah0 and shoot off a single Mage Hunter.

My aim for this turn is to clear the right zone and dominate it with Helynna so there are 4 Idrians and a Rover to clear out. The Mage Hunters kill off the Idrians, with a couple shooting the Rover for some damage. Helynna casts Hand of Destruction on the Rover and pushes it 3” towards the Manticore, who charges it and kills it. In the centre Eiryss kills off another Idrian and takes a shot at Magnus, sadly missing as it would have removed his 3 Upkeeps that were up. On the left the Mage Hunters engage the Hammers, killing one and attempting a CMA on one of the Infiltrators, which sadly misses. I feat in case he attempts to get onto my Manticores.

Adam’s plan is much like mine in that he wants to clear the left zone and start scoring. Unfortunately for Adam he can’t kill the last Mage Hunter who is left to contest. The Mule hits a Critical Devestation into the bubble of Manticores and Helynna, knocking them all down. Magnus feats and runs his jacks into aggressive positions where they can contest the right zone.

Again my challenge is to clear the right zone and score more points. Unfortunately on this occasion dice are against me, and an entire unit of Mage Hunters shooting into a Mule can’t do enough damage to finish it off, and it remains in the middle of my zone, albeit without a Cortex.

Adam knows that his only chance is assassination and that he suddenly has a chance at it. The last remaining Idrian manages to hit and kill Eiryss, allowing Magnus to advance and Scourge Helynna, knocking her down and dealing some damage. He follows up with his shotgun and the Mule’s cannon and finishes her off.

DEFEAT

A rough defeat here, as I liked how the list felt on the whole. Quite a few dice went Adam’s way so I could have ground it out had things been different. I did throw the Infiltrators away too cheaply though. I am learning how important they are to the list and need to be able to hold them back until they can get more significant work done. It is possible that dropping Eiryss3 from them and having them deploy normally could be good for my overall play.
