-Chimera
-Phoenix

-Earthborn Dire Troll
-Mulg the Ancient
-Rok
-Troll Axer
-Troll Basher
Northkin Shaman
Troll Whelps
Troll Whelps
Max Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes
-Stone Scribe Elder

The final round sees me up against James White, and produces some pretty serious list chicken. We end up with a Borka2 against Rahn match, which I was pretty happy about. I win the roll to go first.

Polarity Shield onto the right Halberdiers, TK on the Phoenix and both AFGs and everything runs up the table.

Borka feels that he has to use his Feat early, so does so, puts up Counter Charge and gets himself up the table.

I go through a few different plans on this turn, as can happen when you’re playing against Counter-Charge. I start by TKing the Earthborn on the left away from the building, intending to charge and take it out, but then run a model past it allowing it to Counter Charge back to the building. I then start to run and jam with the Halberdier unit but get Counter Charged by Borka, opening up an assassination angle. I shoot with both Snipers and the Phoenix, before charging with Issyen, sadly leaving Borka on a single box. I position the rest of my army to prepare for next turn.

James has a great turn and takes out all of the Halberdiers, Issyen and the Snipers. We both score 1.

I need to finish off the assassination, and do so by TKing Borka forwards, tying up any Counter Charges and walking the Phoenix up to take it out. A tough Check would ruin my day but thankfully it is failed.

VICTORY

-      A bit of an odd game, but it is always fun to play against James, and useful to see this style of Borka list before the WTC
-      I finished the event 4-2, finishing in 10th with Best in Retribution, so I was overall pretty satisfied.
-      These were my last games in the UK before travelling to Poland. Next Stop, WTC.

Game 253: Rahn vs Rask

Game 253 – Vs Sam Darbyshire – Minions – 02/09/18

My list:

His List:
Rask (Will Work for Food)
-Gatorman Soul Slave
-Blackhide Wrastler
-Ironback Spitter
-Ironback Spitter
Alten Ashley
Bog Trog Mist Speaker
Dahlia Hallyr
-Skarath
Gatorman Witch Doctor
Rorsh
-Brine
-Battle Boar
Wrong Eye
-Snapjaw
Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew

Needing to drop Rahn at some point in the next 2 games I saw this as a good an opportunity as any. Rask is a pain to play against but it is a matchup that is playable. Sam gets the first turn.

Admonition goes onto a Spitter and Rage onto Brine, and everything runs up, using a Veil of Mists to protect against my guns.

I put up Polarity Shield onto the full unit of Halberdiers, and TK both AFGs forward before running up. I think I’ve positioned well to prevent Rask from getting anything next turn.

I hadn’t though. I missed an angle for Brine to Diversionary Tactics up into charge range of the Phoenix, taking both it and the AFG next to it out. Everything else presses up the board under Rask’s Feat.

I charge my Halberdiers on the right into Snapjaw, but somehow fail to take it out under Minifeat. The situation is impossible and I concede the game.

DEFEAT

-      Going second against Rask you can’t afford to make a single mistake, and unfortunately I did with my positioning of the Phoenix.
-      The game would have been an uphill struggle anyway. Vyros would probably have had a better chance, but I dropped Rask hoping to get through the game and then have the choice of lists in the last round.
-      D&C1 is the worst and has no place in the game.

Game 252: Vyros2 vs Krueger2

Round 4 and I’m up against Ian Sturgess with his Circle, and the inevitable Vyros2 vs Krueger2 matchup. This one isn’t pretty, you should probably just move on to the next report and read that instead, it’s much better. Still here? Fine. I win the roll to go first.

I run everything up the table, completely forgetting everything I’ve ever know about how to play against Krueger2. I cast Deceleration.

Ian activates the Fulcrum and does some fairly ineffective shooting, before Trampling a Warden up into range of Vyros and casting Gallows to drag hum 2” forward. A TK later and Vyros is in range of every gun in Krueger’s army, with Synergy triggering Purgation. Thankfully Ian had forgotten that all Jacks are Shield Guards and left me in range of 2, so after the first Wyrd does a bit of damage and removes my Focus I start taking away some damage, and Vyros survives on 10 or so boxes.

I shoot Krueger to death.

VICTORY

-      Nothing to be taken from this really, there are a number of ways I could have played that first turn and picked the worst one. It was only through Ian forgetting a rule that I got away with it.
-      I finish the day at 3-1, but as the event is D&C1 I am starting to be in real list-lock trouble

Game 251: Vyros2 vs Skarre1

Game 251 – Vs Andrew Devine – Cryx – 01/09/18

My list:
Vryos, Incissar of the Dawnguard (Forges of War)

Min Black Ogrun Boarding Party
Min Black Ogrun Boarding Party
Black Ogrun Ironmongers
Max Blighted Trollkin Marauders
-Jussika Bloodtongue
Scharde Dirge Seers

My WTC pair doesn’t have too many hard dodges, but Skarre 1 in Dark Host is definitely one of them. I had never played against it in Slaughter Fleet, but the biggest issue of 4 Stalkers backed up by hard hitting infantry remained. The only positive was the lack of a Wraith Engine making it easier to drop Vyros, but this was still going to be a long shot. I won the roll to go first.

Deceleration and run.

Pirates run up, Skarre bags herself some extra focus for next turn. Stalkers back off slightly.

I push hard to one side of the table and cover the Marauders with Covering Fire to restrict their advance. I take out a couple of Black Ogrun and a Stalker on the right flank. Vyros Feats.

Skarre cuts for 15 on her Feat and spends her stack powering up the world. He takes out most of my army but from very early on in the turn I was just Feat moving Vyros to try and engineer an assassation angle on Skarre. Andrew catches on to what I’m doing and blocks off the best angles, leaving me with a very long shot.

I can’t get a line to Skarre herself, so fire Twisters in a direction that will miss, and a perfect scatter (4+ inches in direction 2) will land on her. Neither scatter correctly and I concede.

DEFEAT

-      I hate Skarre
-      Seriously, just the worst
-      I should have committed to the left flank instead of the right, there was a second Stalker on that flank but even under Feat some of the Marauders might have died to the Covering Fire and it might have left me enough to play the game out with.

Game 250: Vyros2 vs Grim1

Northkin Fire Eaters

Round 2 of Blood & Oil saw me up against my team captain for the WTC. We had played a few games a couple of weeks before and both knew that the matchup had to be Grim against Vyros. I win the first turn.

Take anti-spray formation, cast Deceleration and run.

Andy moves up and spreads out, putting the Fire Eaters in positions on the flanks ready to Assault in next turn

I continue to push up under Deceleration, making sure to keep Griffons back to take the shot from Grim

I missed an assassination angle on Vyros which Andy goes for. He knocks down Vyros with a Man Trap on the Manticore before Trampling in the Earthborn and buying 3 attacks. Some high dice mean Vyros is left on one box. Grim Feats and the Fire Eaters push further up the table

I feel pretty good about my position despite Vyros being close to death. Whilst most of my Griffons are within the Feat, 3 can be freed up by shooting the Runebearer. I take out the Earthborn and Valka and put some decent damage onto the Brawler. I score my flag and Feat. 1-0

The Bears come on and push up the flanks, Andy throws the contesting Griffon out of the zone and concentrates on not killing any models, but deals a lot of damage to a number of Griffons. 2-1 to Andy.

Andy hasn’t been able to back away far enough, and Grim is in range of 2 Fleeted Griffons. I build up Synergy, take out the Impaler which was his only Transfer target, and charge the Griffons in, the first one spiking damage and taking him out.

VICTORY

-      I shouldn’t have allowed an assassination run on Vyros, but was pleased with how I played in the following turn, I managed to keep my head and get Vyros safe whilst still positioning to win the game.
-      Andy and I discussed the matchup after the game, and thing that Vyros is reasonably favoured due to the way the Feats interact. Grim wants to win the game the turn after his Feat, but Vyros counter-Feating makes scoring extremely difficult, which forces Grim into an honest game.

Blood an Oil was an event where I finished 5th last year, and really put myself on the map in terms of the national scene. This year it and the Nationals have essentially swapped places on the calendar, avoiding the Nationals feeling like WTC prep. I took my WTC pair, and was at a slight disadvantage with it being a 2 list D&C event. Round 1 saw me up against Marc with Khador. I won the first turn.

Deceleration and run.

Vlad moves up, casts Signs & Portents and starts shooting, spreading a bit of damage around my jacks. I probably should have held a bit further back to avoid this turn 1 barrage.

With Hunters Mark I can get 3 Griffons into the right gun carriage, so I build up Synergy on the left before charging in, with some spiky dice meaning that the second Griffon takes it out. Vyros Feats.

More guns and Vlad Feat powered Heavies power into my lines, and som clever use of knockdown guns prevent me from using my Feat effectively. I do move Vyros up late in the turn after the jacks had activated though, forcing Marc to desperately try to protect Vlad from assassination. 1-0 to Marc.

In order to get into range of Vlad I have had to move out of pathfinder range of the objective, so Vyros will have to cast Easy Rider to get to the caster. The Manticores and Aspis work to clear out the line for Vyros, who charges in and despite some shaky dice is able to take Vlad out.

VICTORY

-      I shouldn’t have been in range for the turn 1 shooting, which would have left my jacks in much better shape for Marc’s next turn.
-      I was pleased with how I used the Feat though, waiting until the last model was going to die to reveal the Vyros threat, which ultimately won the game.

My pair doesn’t have a particularly good Grymkin drop, but having looked at a few matchup possibilities with the team there is a chance that I will end playing into them. My best hope is knowing the matchup better than they do, so more practice it is. I win the roll to go first.

Everything including Vyros runs up the table.

Grymkin go into a big bunch, with the Swarms and Gorehounds hard on the flanks.

I move around, staying out of threat of most of his forces, trying to tempt something in.

Chris commits with a Cage Rager and 2 Gorehounds, taking out a Griffon and spreading around some additional damage. 1-0 to Chris.

With plenty of targets in range its time to get some work done. I manage to take out one of each heavy and the three Gorehounds, 2-0 to Chris.

Chris takes out both Manticores and 2 lights leaving me in a pretty rough spot. 3-0

I need to take out the Skin&Moans on the left to have any chance of coming back into the game, so I throw everything at it, leaving it on a handful of boxes. I concede.

DEFEAT

-      I was asking quite a lot to take out that Skin& Moans but if I had I think I could have ground the game out.
-      It is a tricky matchup but doesn’t take much of a slip from my opponent to tilt it in my favour
