Game 1 of the Welsh Masters proper saw me go up against Jason Jensen from Ireland, with Cygnar. His pair was Nemo3 and Stryker1 and I liked the chances of Pacific Rim into either of them. He dropped Nemo3 which was a very nice double Storm Strider list in Heavy Metal. I won first turn and we got to it.

I run up as standard, casting Deceleration to protect me from any early shots he might get. He runs up in response, with his 2 armour buffs on each Storm Strider. Crucially he doesn’t cast Magnetic Field which gives me a good way in on my turn 2.

With Thunderhead being within 17” of Helios I make him the target of being pulled in. Defence 12 means 7s to hit so I boost them all and leave him in a spot where the second Helios can come in and destroy it in melee. As a bonus I push the Journeyman’s Firefly out of his control. Helynna moves up, casts Deceleration and feats, preparing to take his feat turn of shooting.

I had moved up too far. Jason knew that his only way out of this game was assassination this turn and went for it. By a slither he could get a Firefly within Ionisation range of Helynna, and by shooting the left Helios, any Electro Leaps that rolled a 2 on the D3 would make it to her. This meant a whole load of boosted Pow12s into my Armour 18 caster and with a Firefly to spare he takes her down.

DEFEAT

Well that was frustrating. I had been playing really clean careful games in the lead-up to this event and in the first game of the real thing I make a mistake as stupid as this. There was no reason for me to move her forward like that, she should have sat behind the wall, making sure that the Electro Leap trail went between the 3 colossals. Worst case scenario he would have needed to roll 3s on the D3s to get to her, and he wouldn’t have had the Firefly there to add 2 to the damage. Jason was a great opponent and played the assassination out very well, but we both agreed it should never have been there. Onwards to game 2 and start working towards my 4-3 target.
