The second day of the NWTC saw us in the top group against the other 2 England teams and the Scottish team we had played the day before. We would be playing each of them over the course of the day so it promised to be a tough day. First up was England Knights, with me into a match up I felt reasonably happy with against Rob with his Khador. The match up came down as Kaelyssa vs Old Witch 2, with Rob winning the roll to go first.

Reconstruct goes up onto the Spriggan and everything gets up the table.

Kaelyssa puts Refuge on herself and everything moves up in response. I consider a turn 1 Feat, but need to get the “no charges” benefit from it to really gain an advantage.

Rob’s list doesn’t have many guns, but the ones it does open up and deal some decent damage to my left Sentinels, with the right unit being blocked off by a crow cloud from OW.

I have a very confused turn, focussing on one plan before being forced to change tack, and as a result I didn’t get anywhere near enough done. I deal some damage to the Spriggan but it does not feel good. 0-0

As part of my really poor turn 2 I had some models outside of Feat, so Rob takes advantage of that, killing 2 Destors and 2 Sentinels on the left. On the right he reblinds some of my Sentinels. 0-0

I finally have a strong turn and start to turn the game around. I stationary both marshalled jacks, and stationary/disrupt the spriggan, taking them all out of action for the next turn. Sentinels on the right take out the Juggernaut and Helios narrowly misses out on taking out the Marauder. 0-0

Rob commits OW to take out a load of the Sentinels on the right, killing a decent number. The Marauder goes into Helios and does a little over half damage to it. 0-0

I think I have a pretty decent assassination on here, so pull the trigger and go for it. Kae puts up Phantom Hunter on Helios before shooting off OW’s 3 Focus. Helios pushes the Kodiak out of the way of the Sentinels, then I have 5 Sentinel charges and Eiryss to take her out. I leave her on one box. 0-0.

I wasn’t all in on the assassination so Rob still has work to do to get himself safe. He handles it well, taking out the Sentinels and getting the Rager over to him to absorb one of my gun shots next turn, using the rest of his focus to heal. The Marauder finishes off Helios.

I have a very long shot to kill OW with Kaelyssa’s gun, but it fails, and I concede the game.

DEFEAT

-      Bit of a sting after that one, even assuming that Kaelyssa does no damage with her gun at all the Sentinels had an 80% chance of taking OW out, so for that to fail was a bit gutting
-      A really interesting matchup, as we have so many things good at taking out the focus of the other’s army, so positioning was really important. Had I not made a huge mess of turn 2 I’d probably have been in a much better place.
-      Team ended up losing the round 4-1, so I was quietly relieved that my bad luck hadn’t cost the team
