There are a number of things that I
need my Kaelyssa list to be able to cover, and one of those is Mercenaries, so
Mark kindly got his out of retirement for a practice game. He ended up dropping
an Ossrum list with 3 huge bases, pretty effectively reducing the tricks my
list can pull off. Mark won the roll to go first and we got moving.
Ossrum puts Snipe onto the Earthbreaker and Fire
for Effect onto the right Siege Crawlier, making its Critical Stagger chance pretty likely. The Dwarfs and huge bases
all run up the table, but their little legs don’t get that far.
I don’t usually go into a game with
a plan of how I’m going to try and win it, preferring to play out a couple of
turns and see how the game progresses, but in this game I know I have the
opportunity for a quick scenario win and aim straight for it. Kaelyssa puts Blur on Helios and Refuge on herself and everything gets up the table. I keep solos
back, but within running range of both flags, and Feat to reduce the damage
Mark can do to me.
Mark is unwilling to trigger Vengeance on the Sentinel units, and so
just picks up what points he can, removing Stealth
from a Destor before shooting it off, and unsuccessfully trying to take out
one of my Destor Thanes. The main mistake he makes in this turn is not getting
his left artillery within 4” of the flag, opening up some big scoring
opportunities for me. Mark Feats to reduce any damage I can put into him.
There are 3 easy CPs on the table
so I move the Staggered Helios over
to the left zone and a solo to each of the flags before jamming Mark up and
dealing what bits of damage I could. I kill one Dwarf and knock down the right
Mortar. Not the most successful turn but I do take a 3-0 lead.
Mark uses the army wide Tactician to good effect this turn,
Forge Guard charging though the huge bases to take out Sentinels and clear off
the artillery so that they could get more work done. He eventually gets the
Earthbreaker into Helios, but struggles to hit DEF12 a bit and only half
destroys it. The Destor Thane on the right lives through the turn against all
odds, contesting the zone, and giving me a 5-0 victory at the end of the turn.
VICTORY
We played
out the next turn to see how my list would do in terms of attrition and I was
able to take out the Earthbreaker, one of the Siege Crawlers and a reasonable
number of Dwarfs, so even without the intense scenario pressure I was still in
a decent position. Unfortunately I just don’t think slow huge based lists like
this are viable in SR2017/18 as on scenarios like Spread the Net (albeit
backwards…) they just can’t contest enough. It was a good thing to see though,
and Mark was a great opponent as ever.
